Why should Brandon not be playing?

GIDP
09-08-2010, 05:39 PM
Brandon needs to get back in his element instead of trying to be someone he isnt. When he swings harder it makes his swing longer and makes his bat slower. I dont know if he just doesnt know that or just doesnt care, but it kills his stroke when he sees a fastball and goes "OH IM GONNA CRUSH THAT" in his mind.

You would think a coach might notice then. Maybe they have spoken to Brandon and he just ignores them. Sounds about right to me.

Honestly I wouldnt be surprised if its a mix of both. Brandon has pride and wants to stick it to people and it doesnt work for most players.

Brandon is whom Brandon is and he is not going to change. He will be with the Reds for another season or two then traded off when his production doesn't equal his value, but right now he is the best option at 2nd that we have.

I'm not giving up on Brandon Phillips, but the guy is struggling bigtime right now. We need him to be the player he was prior to the all-star break, but ever since the STL series last month, he's been playing far, far below that level. I don't understand why Dusty is so reluctant to stick Valaika in there for another game or two, after the way he performed during Brandon's absence.

I am just going to say this. I am not a Reds' fan. I am a Dodgers fan. I have been visiting this site because I follow Chris Heisey. Having said that, I have enjoyed listening to the commentary and think this is one of the best message boards I have ever been a part of.

But my point is that you guys (and most fans I presume) are incredibly short sighted. A couple of weeks ago Jay Bruce should have been in the minors. Drew Stubbs should be in the minors. And now Brandon Phillips should be benched for good. I realize that this is obviously not the feelings of all fans, but it is interesting to be an outside watcher seeing how the mood changes so quick.

When the Reds lost to the Cardinals the first time, almost everyone had given up on the season. Some people were suggesting trading for next year. If you look at my posts I said that people were overreacting and that the Reds' were fine.

I imagine I would be the same way if it was the Dodgers. Don't read this post like I am hi-browing. I really admire the Reds' fans because of this site and if Heisey starts to play better or becomes a regular starter I may become one.

Would be nice to get a win tonight and all. This is what I was saying after the first loss to the Cardinals last week, that these things can quickly twirl into a slump. It's 4 of 5 games lost right now. It can just as easily spiral to 9 of 10. I'm guessing the team has taken the attitude of some of the fans, that this month does matter and keep patting themselves on the back for being up in the division without have to play hard and get wins.

If you select quotes when emotions are spiking one direction or the other, especially during a game thread, you can come up with some pretty extreme opinions. I think all sports message boards have that in common.

I don't think he was trying to be a hero there. I think he was trying to just make contact based on the swing he took. It was far from one of his flailing away swings. But it was stupid for sure. On a 2-0 count in that situation you're either taking or looking for one pitch in the happy zone.

You're not suppose to swing at a 2-0 breaking ball, much less one in the dirt with runners on 1st and 2nd with one of the best hitters in the league coming up.

The team has decided to not play with an edge anymore, ever since that big division lead was gained, they act like the year is over and it's time to take a break.

Do you mean they act like they had their hottest hitter taken away on a road series against arguably the best home team in the majors? And that a few starters have had a few bad outings?

I know technology is on your side of the argument, but I honestly didn't see any awful calls in that at-bat. I'm not saying he didn't throw any strikes, but he was not throwing the ball where Hanigan was set up.
