No, that isn't an Onion story. From the Post Dispatch:

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/article_91b42cf4-c10f-11df-80ea-0017a4a78c22.html

Cardinals citing that Garcia looks "fatigued". Given his workload this year, coming off of 37 innings last year post TJ surgery, well, yeah.

At any rate, not sure this consitutes a white flag moment from the Cardinals, but it feels like one.

It's as close to a white flag moment as you are going to get. Suppan is flat out awful.

I agree, but it's the smart move to make. Kudos to Garcia on a good season. Now lets keep winning games and put the Birds out of their misery.

If the Cards miraculously made the post season, would they use Garcia?

My first thought...white flag. No doubt.

I thought that them sitting Pujols last night was the first sign of a white flag. If they feel they're in it, no way does he not play last night. This is just another sign that the Cards are conceding the division. They're taking a knee and running out the clock, and I love it :).

I doubt it, we probably aren't using Leake in the postseason

If sitting Pujols for a game and shutting down Garcia down for the season is conceding the division, then I think they're conceding the wild card, too.

Yep. They've ridden Garcia fairly hard to this point...if they think they have a decent shot at the postseason...seriously, why stop now?

They've had abetter chance at the division than the wild card for a while now.

To win the division, they just have to hope the Reds falter.

Top win the wild card, they nead 3 teams to flop.

Suppan surpassed the 'he's a gamer out there' stage in 2006. He's survived on guile, grit, and BP fastballs for a long time now. If memory serves me correct, Jay Bruce and Joey Votto love to hit against him

Pujols had a cortisone shot. Probably couldn't have played.

Garcia has been much better than Leake though.

Garcia has been much better than Leake though. His ERA is better, but Garcia has been putting on a ton of baserunners for quite a while now. We'll see how he does in his sophomore campaign.

Pujols had a cortisone shot. Probably couldn't have played.

True, but my point was, I'm not sure he ever has the shot if they feel they're still in it.

I dunno, this does feel like a white flag, but then again the Cards haven't exactly been playing inspired baseball lately. They might turn it on over the last few, but I've been surprised how easily they've rolled over this month.

I don't really see it. He has a WHIP for the year at 1.32 now.

That's a solid WHIP.

Think it's possible that they quit on their rockstar manager?

I heard last night that Garcia is not cool with this. It seems like he's going to skip his next start but after that, it's up in the air.

That's what I heard too. The original plan was to shut him down, but Garcia lobbied against that. It sounds like he will miss one start, but may be starting after that.

Suppan will probably go out and pitch 3 perfect games in Garcia's place. ;)

His ERA, WHIP, BAA, K/9, BB/9, HR, H/9 are all better than Leake's. There is simply no debating Garcia has had the superior freshman campaign, no disrespect to Leake. Leake put on a ton of baserunners from day 1.

I don't think you'll see Garcia again this year unless the Cards make a run at the Reds.
