Chris Young appeared to catch it at the wall, then it fell out of his glove. Could have been scored an error.

Once again the Reds score when I don't watch the start of the game. I'm telling you, there's some kind of sensor when I'm not tuning in, they decide to kick ass.

Then they're like "oh crap, Shane is tuning in, no more runs!" Right when I turned on the TV they hit into a double play. LOL.

Hearing Welsh defend Cordero as closer is amazing. Saying it's a "Whole different world" in the 9th inning if you put Chapman out there and don't know what to expect. First off, Chapman is so new to the majors, he's not going to psyche himself out like a crappy closer. Second, we KNOW what Cordero will do, and that's either blow games or survive by the hair of his chinny chin chin, so how in the heck could someone do even WORSE?

Captain13
09-16-2010, 02:32 PM
Surviving is surviving. The man has blown 8 saves in 44 chances; granted that is a little bit high, but the Reds have won 4 of those games. Remember guys, we have had seasons where guys like Jeff Shaw and Danny Graves had 8 blown saves by the All-Star break. I could be A LOT worse.

That makes no sense. A closer's job is to SHUT the other team down. Would you take a taxi or bus driver to get you home who was totally drunk? Chances are, nothing happens, surviving is surviving right? The point is, why risk it for no reason? That's exactly what Cordero is, risking games for absolutely no reason for it.

Missed a chance to tag up on Gomes' fly ball. I thought it was plenty deep enough. He would have scored on Bruce's hit. Then he hesitated on Bruce's base hit and had to hold at third. I didn't mind the hesitation as much as not tagging up.

A save is a joke stat. You could be up 3 and give up 2 runs, and that's doing your job? You want your game in the hands of a guy who gives up runs constantly? Guess what, in the end you get burned, which we have several times. Because closers who have horrible WHIP's and bad ERA like Cordero eventually get burned. We're trying to win a pennant here.

Why do you want someone in, in the 9th inning that constantly gives up runs? I rather take my chances with Chapman, who has been nearly impossible to get ER's off of since he became closer at Louisville and has been called up.

Yes, it is. That's like me saying that OBP is a stupid stat because one person hit the ball hard and didn't get on base and the next guy hit a blooper and did. You can use any single occurrence to "disprove" a stat's relevance if you really want to.

So OBP is stupid because it calculates how often you get on base, but penalizes you for getting out? So what does RISP calculate other than you got a hit with some standing on 2nd or 3rd. So basically you are equating OBP being flawed because it actually does what it says, but RISP isnt flawed because players can hit with RISP and not knock in runs.

Ok well this is pointless. Obviously BA with RISP is an amazing stat that proves that if you happen to hit a ball and are lucky enough that it lands in you are a great player who drives in runs, even if that guy on 2nd ends up only on 3rd. lol.

But the problem is you used two at-bats as an example of what a farce the stat is. Everything is relative. You tell me. Two guys, both get 200 ABs with RISP. For the sake of argument, say they get exactly the same 200 ABs. One guy bats .325 in those situations. The other bats .275. Who is driving in more runs?

I would argue that the .325 batter is ALWAYS going to drive in more runs. Over the course of that many at-bats, both guys are probably going to have their share of bloopers and of balls that are hit too hard.

you are not including texasdave's 4 condiment references, that has to be a Sun Deck record.

Prior record was one. Shattered it like a fallen bottle of Jif from a kitchen counter.

Over the course of that many at-bats, both guys are probably going to have their share of bloopers and of balls that are hit too hard.

depends on how many of those hits are singles doubles triples or home runs.

It also doesnt mean they are the more productive players, or tell you anything about how they they were pitched.

It also doesnt tell you anything about the players on base or who the balls were hit to.

The bottom line is that Jay Bruce has out-hit and out-slugged Jonny Gomes over the course of the season. He has more homers. Yet somehow, he has 18 fewer RBI than Gomes. You can chalk it up to whatever you want to, but the reason is not that hard to find. Gomes hits .350 with RISP and Bruce hits .240. If you can find another explanation I'd love to hear it.

And no, this does not mean that I'd rather have Gomes than Bruce. It means that hitting well with RISP is vital to producing runs.

That fact would make people feel a whole lot better if two of the worst teams in baseball weren't visiting during said stand. But, fact is, a win over the Yankees earns you the same thing as a win over the Bad News Bears. It's just that we could have sealed this division in this stand, but we essentially played .500 baseball - and that's only because of a miraculous catch.

I'm fine dude, I'm glad to be going to the playoffs. And I'm not freaking out, FYI. I'm plainly stating a fact. We suck right now. 4-3 at home against two of the worst teams in the majors isn't good, especially after losing 6 of 7 before that.

Well, the miraculous catch happened and had it not happened the game would only have been tied. So it's not like you can chalk that up as a win to the Diamondbacks.

If Hernandez's ball eludes the right fielder's glove, we are 5-2 on the stand. We can play what-if all we want. I was happy with the starting pitching and the middle relief in this home stand. The offense needs to wake up and the closer situation ... well, it is what it is.

I really don't care about that. I'm telling you why Gomes has more RBI than Bruce. It's because of some silly stat.

Gomes has more RBIs because hes had more guys on 3rd, and 2nd than Bruce has. those guys are easier to knock in.

It also means that Gomes has been pitched to more.

Of course both of those are completely out of Bruce's control. How they hit with RISP really doesnt have much of anything to do it. It does matter some, but not to the extent some want it to.

Its hard to make a point when someone doesnt care about how that stuff matters and when they are of the opinion that RBI is only a personal stat and that the player only controls it.

Im not going to say that Bruce has done better overall with RISP, but I more than willing to suggest that it doesnt matter as much as you think it does.

A player who gets out more can drive in more runs than the guy who walks and produces more. Gomes and Bruce are prime examples of why RISP and RBI tend to be over valued by fans and fans who shun anything to the contrary.

Ive shown you the flaw in quoting BA with RISP. I showed you why it is over blown. If you arent willing to listen even with my examples then its a lost cause.

You do like to argue....

Look, if you can say you're happy going 4-3 against the Pirates and the Backs, that's fine. Makes me a bit uneasy to feel like we left a game or two on the table before going back on the road, especially considering we are coming off such a poor roadie. The sky is not falling; I am not pissing and moaning about the team. I just don't see how this homestand can be considered a success. And might I remind everyone - we are not in the playoffs yet. Bigger collapses have happened, and these guys need to get their bats working to ensure we finish this thing off.
