I've felt for some time now that a move down in the lineup would do Gomes some good.I'm surprised it has taken Dusty this long considering his willingness to do it with other guys.Moves like this have helped get some guys going better this year so hopefully that continues.Gomes has been better lately though.

1. Is Heisey hitting after Hernandez mainly because Hernandez is a better hitter?

2. Is Hernandez hitting after Gomes mainly because Gomes is a better hitter?

3. Is Gomes hitting after Edmonds mainly because Edmonds is a better hitter?

If the answer to question 3 is "yes," then Edmonds should be playing ahead of Gomes for the bulk of remainder of the season/playoffs in LF.

I think I was wrong in how I stated it. I found this on the Tigers web site:

If an eligible player is injured and unable to play a club can call up any player in the organization regardless of their roster status* provided that the replacement player plays the same position (position player for position player and pitcher for pitcher), the replacement player was in the organization as of the August 31st deadline and they finished the season in the organization, and they receive approval from the commissioner.
*The player would need to be added to the 40 man roster if they weren’t on it before they could be activated. They just wouldn’t have needed to be on the 40 man roster by any other deadlines.

So those are the rules around eligibility. But what actually happens when someone gets injured? The playoff roster is set each round when the lineup card is delivered to home plate (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070212&content_id=1800321&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb). If the first game of the series is postponed, teams can reconfigure their roster as long as the series hasn’t started.
If a player is injured, they can be replaced during the series using the rules stated above. If the player is replaced they cannot come back in the current round, nor can they play in the following round.

I get why they feel the need for the rule, because there would be teams that would use the DL as their reserve roster in the playoffs. But it's terrible that teams may have to play an entire post season series short handed.

Could you imagine if the 1990 WS hadn't ended in 4 games? No Hatcher and no Davis, and a 23-man roster? Ouch.

So very true. Those that call him a bad baseball player, in my opinion, don't pay close enough attention to him as a hitter. The problem is that he goes up there with a Men's over-40 softball approach, which leads to so many strikeouts and pop-ups. But if he really settled down and started going with the pitch, he could actually be a very good hitter. He does have a nice swing and decent bat speed. He just likes the thought of cranking those mammoth softball homers.

It was not very long ago he was struggling to get through 4 innings. Make no mistake, Volquez has the highest ceiling of any of the current Reds' pitchers (outside of Chapman), but I would like to see him throw a few more games before I even begin to trust him in the playoffs. I'd rather run Homer out there right now than Volquez. Bailey has been quietly pretty dependable this year.
