Not 100% sure but I think that is how we clinched in 1979 and 1995.

In 1990, I was at the game at RiverFront where there was a rain delay (resulting in a rainout) and the Dodgers lost. I got to see Paul O'Neil and others do a belly slide on the wet tarp.

I'm guessing their gross income is less than just about everyone else in baseball. That doesn't help, but what really hurts is they have had absolutely no plan. At least no good one.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/pirates/2010-08-22-pittsburgh-finances_N.htm

"Don't feel too sorry for the cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates. Losing has been profitable.

The Pirates made nearly $29.4 million in 2007 and 2008, according to team financial documents, years that were part of a streak of futility that has now reached 18 consecutive losing seasons. The team's ownership also paid its partners $20.4 million in 2008.

The documents offer a rare peek inside a team that made money by getting slightly less than half its income (about $70 million) from MLB sources including revenue sharing, network TV, major league merchandise sales and MLB's website. The team also held down costs, keeping player salaries near the bottom of the National League, shedding pricier talent and hoping that untested prospects would blossom."

the part in bold is the "plan"

Well, for one, that's net income. You were talking about gross income (revenue). And they are surely near the bottom there.

And what would have been the point of the Pirates plowing an extra $25 million into salaries? Do you think that would have made a difference at all? Losing 90 games instead of 100 without making the future brighter probably. And the mention of distributions to partners is kind of silly. As if that is some sort of indictment of the franchise. If you make a profit in a partnership, the partners have to report the profit on their individulal returns. So of course the partnership makes tax distributions to partners so they can pay their taxes. Every partnership does this (unless the partners' advisors when they set up the partnership were completely clueless).

I guess they mentioned partners because they're lucky to have any lol.

We actually agree on there being no point to dumping a little money into a loser. I just think they lose because they have no on-field plans, but they lose 100 because they are cheap. If they wanted to field a semi-decent and losing team they could, and still make money. They are fielding the worst team consistently to make more though, IMO.

And yeah, revenue, not gross, is what I'm really talking about.

It's all cool. When you talk about the Pirates everyone loses. I'll be back to talk about the Reds tomorrow. ;)
