For once, you ask an interesting question. Tougher than it looks. I'm 45, was 10 years old and remember the Big Red Machine vividly. Remember the '90 team vividly too.

1B: Joey Votto
2B: Brandon Phillips
SS: Barry Larkin
3B: (tough decision) Scott Rolen
C: Hernandez/Hanigan as a tandem
LF: Billy Hatcher (he set a record in the '90 series)
CF: Eric Davis
RF: (tough one) Jay Bruce based on his defense and Paul O'Neill got better as a Yankee than he was as a Red.

SP: Rijo/Jackson/Browning (Browning is essentially equal to Arroyo, nobody this year can match Rijo.......he was the ace we don't have this year, but I hope Volquez surprises)
Bullpen: Nasty Boys (hands down)

Wasn't Mariano Duncan the second baseman for the 90 reds? and Eric played LF and Billy played CF or was I too drunk too remember..which is certainly possible.

I never really saw Danny Jackson at his best. How good was he in '90?

I'd take Votto, Phillips and Rolen from the 2010 team and everybody else from the 1990 team.

That 1990 team was great.

Joe Oliver was a great Catcher. Most of his career was spent in Seattle so REDS fans never got to appreciate how good he really was. There's a reason Lou took him with him.

1B VOTTO
2B PHILLIPS
3B ROLEN
SS LARKIN
LF HATCHER
CF DAVIS
RF BRUCE
C OLIVER
SP RIJO/BROWNING/VOLQUEZ
RP CHAPMAN/WOODS/BAILEY/MASSETT

Most of these picks were pretty easy. 3B was the hardest especially growing up idolizing Sabo. Had to pass on the Nasty Boys because our bullpen is going to be very strong especially when you add Woods and Bailey into the mix.

He won 23 games in 1988 and then suffered the injury bug the next couple of years, going 6-6 in '90 with a 3.61 ERA.

Huh????? Seattle???

Oliver was drafted by the Reds in '83. Came up to the majors with the Reds in '89. Was released by the Reds after '94. He went to the Brewers for '95. Came back to the Reds in '96 & '97........he split '98 between Detroit and Seattle, spent '99 in Pittsburgh, went back to Seattle for '00, signed as a free agent after '00 with the Yankees, played 12 games, was released, picked up by the Red Sox, played a few games and was released, finishing his career.

Statistically, I'll take Hanigan/Hernandez tandem over Oliver any day of the week. It's not even a competition. Oliver was good, but not as good as these guys.

And nice memory about Seattle. You got that one completely wrong.

1st Base: Joey Votto ----- Hal Morris
2nd Base: Brandon Phillips ---- Ron Oester
SS: Orlando Cabrara ---- Barry Larkin
3rd Base: Scott Rolen ---- Chris Sabo only because Rolen is old and looks like he might be spent for these playoffs
LF: Johnny Gomes ---- Billy Hatcher
CF: Drew Stubbs ---- Eric Davis
RF: Jay Bruce ----- Paul O'Neill push Paul in '90 and Jay in '10 are pretty much the same player. Great D and still figuring themselves out at the plate.
C: Hernan/Hannigan ---- Joe Oliver

SP: Volquez/Arroyo/Cueto ---- Rijo/Jackson/Browning
BP: Chapman/Rhodes/Massett/Co-Co ---- Nasty Boys

Manager: Dusty ---- Sweet Lou push. I think each manager was the perfect fit for his team.

Votto-easy call :beerme:
Phillips-ditto :D
Larkin-ditto :D
Rolen-no weaknesses in his game
Hatcher-tougher call, but denfense seals the deal :)
Davis-my favorite Red since #13
O'Neill-don't forget his defense was spectacular too :)
Rijo, Jackson, Browning-ouch this staff was good.
Chapman, Nasty Boys-nobody could score on this bullpen.

Not as good as he was a couple years earlier, when he finished runner-up to Orel Hershiser in the Cy Young voting. But he was still good. The Reds pitching staff in 1990 was much better than the current Reds staff.

New York Red

Nasty Boys
Sweet Lou

Looking at that 1990 lineup, it's still hard to believe they won the World Series - and in dominating fashion. That just goes to show that all that matters is getting hot at the right time. The '90 Reds only got hot twice that year - the first three weeks of the season, and then again once the playoffs started. But when they were on, they were nearly unbeatable.

3rd Base: Scott Rolen ---- Chris Sabo Great D, great presence
LF: Johnny Gomes ---- Billy Hatcher Just about a draw
CF: Drew Stubbs ---- Eric Davis In future, maybe Stubbs, not this year
RF: Jay Bruce ----- Paul O'Neill Very similar when Paul was a Red
C: Hernan/Hannigan ---- Joe Oliver Not even thinking twice.
SP: Volquez/Arroyo/Cueto ---- Rijo/Jackson/Browning I want Rijo on this year's staff
BP: Chapman/Rhodes/Massett/Co-Co ---- Nasty Boys They were Nasty for a reason

Lineup:
1. Phillips
2. Larkin
3. Votto
4. Davis
5. Bruce
6. Rolen

8. Hernandez/Hanigan

Not thrilled with Phillips up front, but who you going to put there?

That lineup would do damage.

I can only assume that anyone selecting the current bullpen was too young, or not yet a Reds fan, to remember the Nasty Boys of 1990. They were our bullpen and some combination of the three pitched in virtually every game.

The only earned run they allowed in 10 games was in game one of the NLCS, and if memory serves me correctly, that run was aided by a misplay of a fly ball.
