Red Sox RF Dwight Evans hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5. But the Reds responded in the bottom of the tenth as Gesar Geronimo led off with a single. Pinch-hitter Ed Armbrister then laid down a controversial bunt. The Red Sox claimed Armbrister interfered with Carlton Fisk's throw to second base. Home plate umpire Larry Barnett disagreed, and Fisk was charged with an error, allowing runners to advance to second and third. Pete Rose was then walked intentionally to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Merv Rettenmund was called out on strikes for the first out. Joe Morgan then ended the game with an RBI single, scoring Geronimo with the winning run and giving the Reds a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Series.
