View Full Version : 2010 MLB Depth Chart- A spreadsheet I did

Just did this for the fun of it, and thought I'd post it here. I used ESPN for games played, which is what it's based off of mainly. The exceptions are for finding the team's "closer" which I used saves for, and for "set-up men," where I used whoever had the most appearances in the 8th inning with a 0-,1-, or 2-run lead (Thanks to BR). The "C2, IF1-2, and OF1-2" spots were whoever, not counting starters, had the most games at catcher, the infield, and the outfield. For the "UP (utility player)" in the NL, I used whoever, besides those who were in the other bench spots already, had the most games total. For tiebreakers, I used games started for position players, innings pitched for starters and the "RP1-4 (which are the team's 4 most used relievers games pitched-in wise, not counting the closer and 2 set-up men)," and for set-up men I first eliminated 2-run leads, then tie games. Hope it's useful!

Appreciate the effort my man.

Might I suggest using Google Docs or another online spreadsheet and simply link it? It looks good, but because of the width, it will make this thread hard to read having to scroll so far to the right. Just a suggestion.

Thanks, Brutus. And check my edited original post. Also, I meant to throw some reference to you in there regarding your spreadsheet work, but I forgot.

Make sure you set googledocs permission to allow access. Right now it is denying my google account access and will do so to anyone who isn't granted permission to view the document. Thanks for the work!

I'll look at the Google Docs thing in the morning. For now I've put it back in CODE tags.

No problem. As 1869 suggested, make sure you adjust preferences to "allow everyone" to view. Right now, no one can see it when they visit the link because by default, the privacy setting blocks everyone but yourself.

Not to be a wiseguy I realize you put in alot of time with it, but what would we use it for?

Well... not much. It was just kind of a "Well, I wonder who the Marlins back-up catcher is" type thing, and I made a spreadsheet out of that.

Oh ok I didn't know if you had something specific in mind that wasn't clear to me.

If I wonder about a potential trade, your spreadsheet will give me an idea of a potential trade partner's depth and needs. Nice work.

Anybody have any other spreadsheet ideas- I have a lot of free time, and enjoyed making the last one.

Keeping this one up to date as players move around would be most useful.

But I didn't do it based on where I felt the teams were at. There were a few that did not reflect that, because I did it based on games played. IE, Begie Molina was not the back-up catcher for the Giants and Rangers this year, he was starting catcher with the SFG, then with TEX, however, as he was 2nd in GP at catcher last year for both teams, that's where he ended up.

So yes, I could keep it updated, but to do that the same way I did this year, I'd have to update it only every year.

Thinking about doing a projected 2011 one, that I'd keep updated through the offseason. It'd be hard to keep up with the benches and back end of the pen before ST though.

BUMP

Starting some work on an updated projected one. Doesn't include the back-ends of benches and pens though, as those are hard to project and tend to fill themselves out later in the off-season.

I suck at doing these things, just don't manuever well thru them. But I was wondering about future 40 man considerations and payroll. I wondered just how all this would lineup so we could have a clear and concise picture of when we are in danger of losing guys, both to FA & prospects in rule 5 drafts. There is an idea if your interested.

I found the MLB.com depth charts. Look pretty accurate to me. I'll use these to make my 2011 projected one, and try to keep it updated.

Anyone know where I could find a RANKED list of CURRENT free agents?

Well I'll take that as a no then.

No, thanks for the idea. Maybe sometime, but through this off-season, I"m just gonna try to keep my MLB depth chart updated.

I got a stat question I encountered while making my 2011 depth chart- acc. to BR, Russell Branyan had a 1.0 WAR in 2010 with the M's, and a 1.7 WAR in 2010 with the Tribe. For some reason they don't list his total WAR for a season. So how do you calculate that. Do you average the 2 #s, or add them together?
