Based on what I saw with the Yanks, he could barely play first base and he looks awful batting right handed. Don't know if he was injured, but he looked like a shell of his former self.

LaRoche has been a league average-ish 1B over the course of his career, so not only is he nothing special, but he's also coming off a year in which he only managed to get on base 32% of the time. That kind of production isn't particularly difficult to replace. He's also 30, so he's not all that likely to improve.

Ankiel is interesting because of his seeming athleticism, a guy with a golden arm who could convert to playing the OF and hit 20-25 HRs. Yeah, he's an interesting player -- but I think he's had enough major league time to show what he can do. Agree that the same approach should be taken with him as with Webb.

...Mariners decline option on Russell Branyan...

Could the 35-year-old-to-be Branyon be athletic enough to be one of the LH hitting platoon partners for Gomes in 2011? Russell once played the OF in 17 games for the Reds -- but that was way back in 2003. More recently he has done just 1B and DH in the AL. He is not a great fielder but perhaps could be a serviceable corner OF-corner IF-pinch hitter still.

In 2010, the 34 year old Branyon managed 25 HR in just 376 AB (one HR every 15 AB), 57 RBI, batted .237, had an OBP of 323, and slugged .487 -- for a $1,500,000 salary.

However, he struck out nearly 35% of the time and walked less than 12% of the time.

Meh. He wouldn't be the worst choice, but the Reds primary need for this role is a guy to back-up Rolen frequently and Phillips occassionally. Aybar wasn't very good against either lefties or righties in 2010. 2008 and 2009 saw him with some decent platoon splits where he hit well against LHP and struggled against RHP. Since Phillips and Rolen are both RH and Phillips in particular shows some splits of his own where he hits LHP well, I'd hope for a LH bat in that role who hits RHP.

Aybar, might see a nice bump by moving to GABP and the NL Central and away from facing the Red Sox, Yankees and Blue Jays so often, and he wouldn't be a horrible signing, but I think a better fit could be found.

I like Francis a lot, but I imagine he'll want a one year deal in a place with a lot of openings in the rotation so he can rebuild his value and try the market again next year. I love signing these types, but the Reds have moved into a period where they won't be a very desirable place for guys like this (that includes Brandon Webb, Erik Bedard and others trying to bounce back from a down year or an injury as well). The Rotation is pretty full making it difficult to get an opportunity and the park won't help them rebuild their market value.

This is the kind of guy who goes to St. Louis on the cheap and kills us.

The Blue Jays are trying to get a compensation pick for him.

That's possible, but it seems dumb to pay 500k to get a compensation pick, especially since they now have to risk offering him arb.

If he had a higher salary, I'd say they traded for him, hoping to renegotiate for less (like the Rockies and Pokey Reese), but since his option was only 2.5 million, and they paid a 500k buyout, how much are they hoping to save.

I guess you are right, offering arb to get the compensation pick is the only thing that makes sense. Still seems dumb to me. Why not take that 500k and put it directly into the draft. Draft a high school kid with a high ceiling in the late round who wants a big payday to forego college.

Those moves leave the 40 man roster at 34. Assuming they are holding 3 spots with attempts to bring Rhodes, Hernandez and Cabrera back, that would leave just three spots for promotions from the minor leagues to protect guys from Rule 5 and only Corky Miller as an obvious removal. I see 10 reasonable candidates who require protection (Carroll, Horst, Hotchkiss, Avery, Thompson, Frazier, Cozart, Negron, Dorn, and Wlad) with a deadline for promotions before the end of the month. I have to wonder if some deals will be made sooner rather than later in an attempt to fill some holes, settle the roster and ease the logjam. If the Reds are going to make some room by pulling a few prospects for players deals, it coud make guys iike Cabrera and Ramon no longer necessary and would make it make sense that the Reds signed some AAA vets like Lehr and Gil when the spots seem to all be filled.

Why would they leave those spots open now? Wouldn't it be better to fill up your roster if you have the talent, then worry about an open roster spot for someone if you sign him?

I'll mention the reason I'm not posting "housekeeping" moves is because there've been thousands the last few days. I've only been posting transactions where a player changes teams, or when somebody who wasn't expected to becomes a FA. Thanks for posting the Reds ones, though!

Agree. If they get to the deadline and they don't sign anybody, they'll surely use them. I'm just thinking they may sign a couple of those guys quickly. They don't want to promote somebody and then have to DFA later. These guys have a better chance of being kept by being exposed to Rule 5 than they do by being promoted and then exposed to waivers if they have to be removed.

I've come around to the idea of not bringing any of those guys back. Save the cash for LF, use Corky and eventually Mesoraco to replace Ramon. Replace Cabrera with Cozart with Negron at AAA if needed and since it sounds like Chapman is in the majors to stay, he'd be my late inning lefty with Rhodes let go.

Since the reds are talking about top of the order, I think they could make a play for David Dejesus w/o having to give up to much by simply taking on his cash. Ramon and Rhodes would probably combine to make the same $6 Million that Dejesus would cost. I'd still prefer middle of the order, but the Reds don't seem to be leaning that direction.

Dejesus is a solid target for the team to acquire. I don't think he would cost a lot in terms of prospects & his 2011 salary wouldn't break the bank. Gomes could fill in at times vs RHP when Dejesus needs a day off plus Dejesus could play RF when Jay needs a day off (with Gomes playing LF that day).
IMO Dejesus & Kelly Johnson both fit what the Reds need: a LH bat who can play LF but can also play elsewhere at times. I suspect there are a couple of other players out there who fit this description.

It's actually not all that surprising. They're never going to be big players in the traditional free agent sense, but I think they're making much more of an effort on the international market. If my memory serves me correctly, they were one of the finalists for Chapman.

Dejesus was almost a perfect addition for the team. Not too expensive salarywise & available for a couple of so so prospects.
This was the kind of trade Walt should have made.

On WLW last week Walt implied that the uncertainty of the arbitration cases would hold him back a bit. Basically, he has to figure out how much money he has left after he signs Votto, Bruce, Cueto & Volquez. But it seems odd that he couldn't add Dejesus's $6M right now. I think the GM of the Year was asleep at the switch on this one.

You've got a bunch of teams sniffing around Crawford and/or Werth now who won't get either of them and several more who don't know yet if they'll have an extra $6M to spend and a few others who might have to trade their best OF prospect for that pitcher they need.

No. Matt Maloney is right on par with Mazzaro.

Vin Mazzaro - minor league stats

538 IP, 3.98 ERA, 9.1 H/9, 3.2 BB/9, 6.8 K/9

Matt Maloney - minor league stats

807 IP, 3.30 ERA, 8.1 H/9, 2.6 BB/9, 8.6 K/9

Mazzaro also has a 4.72 ERA in 213.1 innings at the major league level compared to Maloney's 4.26 ERA in 61.1 innings.

Let's not act like Mazzaro is some sort of stud. He's not on the level of a Bailey, Leake, or Volquez.

My thought exactly, Cust was almost tossed aside last year and with the huge foul area plus EE's less than stellar 3rd base skills I can see them shying from placing him there everyday and looking at the DH position to get some pop in the lineup at a low cost... because he getting what he was just paid the last 2 years.

That said his power will be affected, as most are once they step into Alameda County.

I can see their logic. Miller has a great arm but absolutely terrible mechanics. Someone in their developmental team must see potential to restructure the kid's approach. Outside of unfinished product Saltalamacchia, I can't think of any other "guys like Miller" they have tried to fix.

People also questioned the Reds when they picked up Josh Hamilton. The Giants gambled on Tim Lincecum. Miller was once a highly regarded prospect and perhaps worth a toss of the dice.

I would have really liked for the Reds to be in on one or both of these guys. Despite their early failures, they are both still relatively young and have enormous upsides. While admittedly, I am a sucker for these kinds of pickups (ex-top prospects who have yet to achieve their potential), I would think that Ondrusek, Bray, and Maloney could have netted us both of those guys- given what their actual returns were. While it would sting to lose Ondrusek, I would have done that deal in a second.

I'd still like to see the Reds go after Ellsbury. Alonso and Heisey seems like a fair price.

I have really no idea what the Marlins are doing on a few moves here. Giving up on Maybin at 23 with a career minor league OBP of .393? Why is my question?

Then the Uggla deal is just terrible.

You mean his OBP is .393.

Hey from Disney World, I have limited internet access here, so I'll probably resume my updates somewhat Saturday.

Pirates dumped former everyday players Andy LaRoche and Delwyn Young, and former *ahem* ace Zach Duke.

I'd be interested in Young in the 25th man role ahead of Miguel Cairo. Young is a switch hitter who was a beast in the minors and he plays 2B, 3B and corner OF (he's an iffy defender). All are spots where a guy who can bat lefty would fit nicely. I'd rather have him than Cairo and I'd prefer him to Valaika. I might be tempted to give Fancisco a look in the 25th man role based on his hot hitting in the winter, but he'd need to be play in the OF well enough that the team wouldn't be afraid to use him like they were last year. Of course if he could do that, I'd give him a share of the LF job until he proves the skeptics (me included) right (and if he defies the evidence, the middle of the order problem is solved). With Nix gone, there may be room for both Young and Francisco.

The thing a guy like Cairo has over Young (despite outperforming him last year) is that Cairo knows his role and is comfortable with it. If a guy in that role still thinks he should be a starter that can cause some unwanted disruptions. Not saying Young himself would be a problem, just that it is a factor that needs to be considered.

I have looked pretty foolish pushing for Brandon Wood for the last couple of years, but now, with his value at its lowest, might be the time to take a gamble on him. Like Brandon Phillips a few years ago, a change of scenery might help the kid.

Though he has yet to prove he can hit in the majors, the potential is still there and his defense is very good at third, short, and first base. A new organization, ballpark, and league, with different expectations, may help him develop. And he would probably not cost much in money or prospects.

Javier Vazquez signs one year deal with the Marlins.

This is interesting, it's a $7MM deal with a full no trade clause and the Marlins can not offer him arbitration.
