Article says Pena "saw a promising opportunity with the Diamondbacks, whose left field situation remains uncertain."

For some reason, I know of another team whose left field situation remains uncertain. ;) :D

I've a feeling he might regret not taking that job in Japan (or that he might take it later). I seriously think he could become huge over there.

I was dead wrong about Wily Mo. I thought he was going to become a stud, a perennial 35-40 HR guy, especially after his 2004 season when he hit 26 homers in only 336 atbats and posted an .843 OPS. I remember how ticked off I was when he was traded for Arroyo. That turned out to be one of the better trades the Reds have made in recent history.

BCubb, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "rewriting" his contract. At this point, he's no longer hampered by the inability to do time in the minors (without clearing waivers) as he was with us. At this point, he's signed a minor league deal and the D'Backs will see if he can succeed or not.

I was in the same boat there, I was seriously upset the day of that trade as well, and thought we had made a huge mistake although we were deep in the OF. I was there when he hit his first HR and he was a fav of mine since then. And I thought he was easily going to hit more HR's than Dunn. But again, life can take weird twists and turns. I hope the best for him!

Certainly when I posed the question I wasn't not thinking about the joke of it. I guess I saw the allusion, but was mystified why it was pertinent to this present signing. It's no big deal. I suspect folks are correct that Pena's not going to be able to put it together now and, frankly, it's such a shame his career had the turns it did at such a young age. It would have been interesting to have seen what minor league seasoning would have done for him at the appropriate age.

It's not like he went straight from the Dominican to the Reds. He was in the minors from 99-02. Did he need more seasoning down there? Sure, but it's not like he didn't get any minor league playing time at all.

I would have liked to seen how he would have done with regular playing time. I thought he might have got that in BOS when Manny left but he may have been too far gone to even consider him being a MLB regular player.

He did miss almost a year in the minors to injury. Bad luck is all there. I think he picked the right team in AZ. Good fit.

Wily Mo is tearing up the PCL. He leads the league in HR with 6 and has opened the season with a 13 game hitting streak.

But the driving force stems from being 16 years old with a major league contract. He was immediately added to the 40-man roster, which meant he ran out of minor-league options before he had fully developed.

Peņa was in the majors at 21 with the Reds, who could not send him to the minors without the risk of losing him via waivers.

His story is the cautionary tale cited by those hesitant to give amateur players major-league contracts and risk stunting their development.

"I wish I could have done it sooner," Peņa said of his new approach. "But I was so young. I didn't understand everything."

Wily Mo is 29. Dude has been crushing fastballs and whiffing on breaking balls since the beginning of time, and he's still not 30 years old.

I know a Red Sox guy who works for my employer. We bump into each other a couple of times a year, and I always ask him if the Sox have another Bronson Arroyo they'd like to trade away.

I know you need more than one year of advanced fielding data to draw any conclusions, but I find it interesting that he had a positive UZR/150 that year as well. Wily was bludgeoned here for his poor routes and according to a small sample of stats, he was above average.

Wily Mo was one of those rare players who was better in CF than in the corners. His routes tended to be better in CF for some reason. It could be that season was where he was in CF more. He did provide some pretty funny moments playing RF in Fenway but I remember him making a remarkable catch over the wall in CF of Great American.

If MLB had a clue they would change the rules for the HR Derby and stick him in it.

Wily Modesto Peņa, better known as Wily Mo, hits baseballs for a living, which is sort of thing a 29-year-old man named Wily Mo would do. He hits them hard, probably harder than anyone alive. When dead-red fastballs meet Wily Mo's bat, his home runs do not fly. They teleport.

They end up in strange, often distant places where other baseballs wouldn't dream of going. Into remote bleacher sections, off office buildings, past railroad trenches – Wily Mo has hit home runs everywhere. Other balls just disappeared into the night, like shooting stars.

Back when everyone was juicing Wily Mo didn't really bring anything to the table that your average 2B or SS didn't provide. Now, teams might be willing to put up with a DH hitting .200 if he can hit 40+ HRs when given a good amount of ABs.Looks like he's proven that there's still a lot of power there, so I'd be very surprised if some AL team doesn't give him a chance to DH.

Completely agreed. They should just pay Juan Francisco to hit out BP home runs to fans before the game and then let him sign autographs during the game. I don't see any way Juan Francisco will ever be an average major league starter with his allergy to taking a walk.

Francisco has better plate discipline than Wily Mo. I will be honest, Juan Francisco's plate discipline is MUCH better than his K/BB ratio would suggest. I have said it before.... they guy is willing to take a pitch as long as that pitch isn't ball 4. It seems that he is more willing to wait and see than ever before, but he still doesn't seem to get the idea that a walk isn't a bad thing. If someone could just convince him that a walk is not a bad result, that he would be a 3-1 K/BB guy instead of a 6-1 guy.

One major flaw in the comparison between WMP and JF is that WMP is a right handed hitter who generally has thrived against lefties but struggled against righties. (I've reviewed his major league stats and indeed this is so.)

As a platooner who hits against lefties and who is a poor outfielder, WMP has struggled to stay in the major leagues. To put WMP in perspective, he is a righty platoon outfielder who is not as good as Gomes. Platoon righty hitters don't get many at bats.

Francisco is a lefty bat. He feasts on righty hitting. Since major league pitching is mostly right handed, JF is a materially more valuable player. And, as DD suggested, he is a better all around hitter than WMP, although JF needs to understand that walks are good.

The jury is certainly still out on JF, but I don't think the comparison with WMP is a particularly good one.

I may seem like I am flip flopping here, but I really do think the jury is still out on JF. My previous post was partly in jest. I just don't like his historical walk rate. My problem with JF is that he doesn't walk and I hate that he is getting a chance to be the "3B of the future" of Todd Frazier. I really like Todd, despite his rough 2010, and think that he has a good chance of being an above-average MLB third baseman. Granted, the Reds probably know better, but I sense a solid ball player in Todd Frazier.
