Okay it's the beginning of Jan, so lets do some early guessing here. If asked to write out the lineup card YOU believe Dusty will post on that Thursday game vs. the Brewers whom will be on it, where will they be playing and what will the batting order be....

Here is mine:

Scott P - Leadoff - playing LF
Edgar R - Batting 2nd - playing SS
Joey V - Batting 3rd - Playing 1st
Scott R. - Batting 4th - Playing 3rd
Brandon P - Batting 5th - Playing 2nd
Jay B - Batting 6th - Playing RF
Drew S - Batting 7th - Playing CF
Ramon H - Batting 8th - Playing C
Bronson A - Batting 9th - Pitching.

PLEASE NO! The top two would be a disaster.

Remember Hanigan is usually the guy who catches for Arroyo. So pending on who you believe will start Opening Day, decides who will also be catching Opening Day.

Here's what I'd like to see, with the possibility of swapping Stubbs and Phillips. It's really all about OBP in that number 1 slot and it's too early in Stubbs' career for me to get a definitive feel for his ability to get on base. I like what I saw toward the end of last season, though, so I'm hoping it carries over.

Is this a prediction, or what we would do?

If vs a righty, what I would do.

1) Votto
2) Rolen
3) Bruce
4) Gomes
5) Phillips
6) Stubbs or Renteria
7) Arroyo
8) Hannigan Stubbs
9) Janish Hannigan

I like the idea of getting Votto an extra at bat every 3 games, I like the idea of putting a pitcher on the defensive by worrying about a homerun the very first guy and even more, I like having somebody start the game on base (over 40% for his career), after the first inning he's back to being the RBI machine.

Votto at LO? Not a chance, he is your 3 guy. Would you have Batted Barry Bonds or Mark Mcgwire lead off?

where is phillips?

I'd move Phillips in a heartbeat. It's either a pop-up or a DP and his lack of hustle is reason alone to cut bait. I want guys on the team that play the game the right way.

I will agree he can frustrate at times, but this year he is going no where, now next offseason I can see them moving him, but not now.

Votto
Rolen
Bruce
Stubbs
Renteria

vs. LHP

Stubbs
Phillips
Votto
Rolen
Bruce
Gomes
Renteria

I'd probably shuffle those lineups around more, like batting Bruce 4th against RHP and Gomes 4th against LHP. But my guess is Dusty will want the lineup that allows the most continuity, so the above is what I think we'll see.

I'd love to see this lineup with Stubbs or Lewis leading off, depending on who looks better doing so in spring training. I like Janish 2nd since he can handle the bat well and will see a ton of fastballs to work with.

Stubbs CF
Janish SS
Votto 1B
Phillips 2B
Bruce RF
Rolen 3B
Lewis LF
Hernandez C
Cueto P

Edit: If Janish didn't do too well there I'd drop him down and move Phillips back to the 2 hole.

To me Bailey would have to be dominate in ST to earn a spot over Wood or Leake. The only other way I see Bailey in the rotation is if there is an injury or Volquez struggles.

Or the Reds could trade Volquez and his unconventional ballcap for a True upgrade...

No one is going to take Volquez right now for anything of value. Now maybe if he can show a return to form that by the trading deadline his value will increse, but right now you would not get much in return for him.

I've been holding off until we see our LF signing, now that it's Fred Lewis, I think we can assume we'll see Lewis against righties and Gomes against lefties.

I'd like to see:

Stubbs CF
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Rolen 3B
Bruce RF
Lewis LF
Hanigan C
Janish SS
Arroyo P

But....

I'm expecting Dusty to go:
Lewis LF
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Rolen 3B
Bruce RF
Renteria SS
Stubbs CF
Hernandez C
Arroyo P

With our rotation as Arroyo, Cueto, Leake, Wood, and have Homer and Volquez battle for the 5th spot in SP. Ideally, I'd want to see Volquez get that last spot because he has better upside. Someone isn't going to make the rotation and Arroyo, Cueto, Leake and Wood are locks for me.

Stubbs and Lewis posted nearly identical OBP last year. If Stubbs is ready for the role I'd like to see him get the leadoff spot as I imagine he's the faster of the two.

I myself look for him to be in at the top of the rotation come opening day. I've seen everything from trading him to him batteling for the fifth spot in the rotation. I hope the majority is wrong here because we really need him to be #2 at the least.

He was only good his very first time around the league and as that 1 good season wore on, each month his ERA rose as his pitches were hit more and more...

What do you think the 2011 rotation will be?

Volquez has only pitched about 110 innings in the past two years and his ERA in those years was 4.31 and 4.35. He could be the 1st half of 2008 Volquez, but we might not see that again. To depend on him to revert back to pre-injury Volquez if he doesn't show anything in spring training could make him a liability when we have plenty of young guys who proved themselves last year.
