What does everything think?
I believe it's a good deal and it looks like the Reds are locking up a good starter with still some upside!

Reds may actually be the most active team in the offseason after all.

According to John Fay (consider the source). Per his twitter...

"ESPNdeportes is reporting #Reds and Cueto have agreed to 4-year deal. Reds say deal is not done."

This is smart, get your budget set for the next 3-5 years so you know where and what you can add and need to subtract, good move.

My first reaction was of sheer surprise, but after looking into his past seasons, WAR, young age, and overall skillset, I've come to really like this deal. Good job, Bob/Walt.

It will be done soon. Cueto just needs to pass his physical i'm sure. Overall good deal though.

Yeah, I'm starting to like these moves.

I was reading an article about Jose Arrendondo today and I gotta give the Reds props for taking a low risk chance on him too.

The bullpen could be surprisingly good this year to go with our starting pitching.

I actually think Walt will make some other deals after all the arbitration guys are taken care of and they know what payroll will be.

This is brilliant. I am a happy Reds fan. I think they should try to lock up Volquez long term as well. Buy low. Can't be more excited about the Reds pitching staff.

How does this the lenght of this deal compare to his arbitration years? Does this lock him up for any longer, or just set the terms for he hears he's already commited to the Reds?

The four years covers all three of his arb years plus his first season as a free agent.

It looks like now that it is official, an option year for his second free agent year is included as well, although I have not seen how much that will cost yet.

Just about the whole team is locked up without arbitration for the next three years due to this offseason. That is a HUGE success, in my opinion.

The Reds web site article:

http://reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110126&content_id=16511012&vkey=news_cin&c_id=cin

The subtitle of the article states: "Reported $27M contract includes 2015 option"

That sounds as if the cost of the option year is included in the $27 M. If that interpertion is correct it would be great news.

Per http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6061693

Cueto gets $3.4 million this year, $5.4 million in 2012, $7.4 million in 2013 and $10 million in 2014. Cincinnati has a $10 million option for 2015 with an $800,000 buyout.

$10 million a piece for his first two free agent years is a pretty nice price if he continues along the road he is on, good signing, even better to get the second year as a club option.

If he turns into an ace level pitcher, this is a steal.

I can't believe I even know this much about the guy, but his name is Chuck D and he is pretty much the Reds biggest super fan. I started seeing him all the time last year, because my favorite place to watch the game is standing under the Pepsi stacks and he is usually out there.
They even had a video of him reciting some oath about being a member of "Dusty's Destroyers" that they played on the jumbo tron at one game I was at.

A steal if he's an ace, as they go for about $20-30 million/year.

If you put any value into sabermetrics, he was a bit of a steal for a $10 million/year contract last season as well (worth about $15-17 million last year).

I wouldn't pay Cueto 15-17 million a year. Heck, that's more than Chris Carpenter is being paid. And now how is Carpenter gonna explain THAT to his son? :)

Cueto had the lead in 6 games last year that ended up being losses by the bullpen. Instead of only 12 wins, he might have had 15 to 18 with some good bullpen luck.

At $10M per season, he would be a steal right now. Great signing.

As long as he stays healthy and continues to learn and improve, this is a great contract.

Carpenter is getting ripped off. Javier Vazquez just got paid $11.5 million for what he did last year with the Yankees. Barry Zito got paid $18.5 million for what he did last year with the Giants. If you average out everyone in between Carpenter and Zito, a guy like Cueto is worth $15-17 million per year. I can link you to sites that do this.
