As I do every year, I'm making a thread specifically for spring training related blog updates/articles that doesn't deserve a thread of its own.
From John Fay - All here but Volquez

But everyone but Edinson Volquez has already checked in.

“He’s supposed to get here tomorrow,” Dusty Baker said. “But he may have to go back to the Dominican because of Visa problems from his suspension.”

From Mark Sheldon:

One of the things I watched was Aroldis Chapman long tossing with bullpen coach Juan "Porky" Lopez. Chapman was chucking balls from the center field warning track area to Lopez, who was at the foul line just beyond first base. Let me tell you, these were some impressive heaves.

I'm not a scout so I'm not qualified to say who looked good or not. But Gil could be an interesting pitcher to keep on your radar. He is a converted shortstop/outfielder that had a rifle right arm. I remember scout Gene Bennett once telling me a few years ago about seeing Gil in Double-A throw a ball to home plate from the center field warning track -- without a hop.

I hope Alonzo gets lots of time out there and wins the job. If he does, my expectations for this team will skyrocket. If he can show that he can be the LH half of the LF platoon and be up by June, that would be the missing something extra that this team needs to move up to the next level. Status Quo Reds are an 86 to 90 win fringe contender. Add another legit middle of the order presence to what is already here and IMO they jump to a 95 to 100 win team that is a serious threat to win it all.

I'm glad to see Alonso will be seeing some time in LF...

From Joe Kay:

Dusty Baker plans to use Yonder Alonso in LF during #Reds spring training. Alonso stuck behind Joey Votto at 1B.

SS Edgar Renteria shows up at #Reds camp. He's Paul Janish's backup to start season.

Renteria says it was hard to go from World Series MVP to looking for a job. #Reds signed him as backup SS. Might play some at 3B.

Dusty Baker not keen on using Renteria at 2B for #Reds: "I don't think I've ever seen him play 2B and that's a totally different position."

Wouldn't it be great if Alonso could just play an adequate LF! I would take a Gomes-like defense if Alonso can hit as well as he is projected to. That would go a long way in solidifying this team.
Interesting that Jon Jay of the Cards was helping him out this winter. I bet a certain manager doesn't like hearing that. :)

"I want to stay here. It is the team that drafted me No. 1, I know everybody here, I feel comfortable here, I love Cincinnati, a great city. It's perfect for me. So it bothers me when I get asked that and it gets annoying after a while," he said.

"No, I like it here, I want to stay here, let's make it work," he added. "This team is good and we're going to compete and do well. Guys are good. So it's fun and I want to be part of it."

I really hope The Reds aren't seriously considering Willis as starter material, or at least not as anything more than a spot starter.

I thought it was pretty much accepted around the league that his days as a rotation guy were done?

His only value is as a releiver, imo.

If he's one of the five best starters, then I want him starting. You would close your mind to that possibility?

It's possible Willis might improve ... and it's even more possible that a young Reds starter will take a step back.

I'm rooting for Willis to pitch like the guy from five years ago (but I'm not expecting it), and for Leake and Wood and Bailey and Cueto and Volquez all to pitch well enough that even the 2006 Willis isn't enough to make the rotation (but I'm not expecting it).

Basically, I don't care which five are in the rotation ... as long as they're getting outs.

Dusty said Alonso is working out in LF and at 1B. "Sometimes, you’ve got to let them play. They’ll take care of the projections." #Reds

Cordero sounds like a stand-up guy. I like him a lot more and expect a better year from him. I think having more guys that Dusty trusts in front of him may keep him from being run ragged in April and May. Being in better shape will help a lot, but I think Dusty ran Coco and Rhodes into the ground in the first half and it showed in the second half. IMO, even with the loss of Rhodes, the pen will be the most improved and dominant part of the team.

I tend to agree with you about Dusty over-doing it with guys he has faith in.

It's good to have guys you can trust but there is no reason you have to always go with any pitcher in the 8th or 9th inning just because he's your set up man or your closer.

Sometimes it's best to save'em until you really need'em.

Mark Sheldon - Stubbs seeking quicker start

"Ultimately, the leadoff spot is just hitting first to start the game. After that, it's just another spot in the lineup," Stubbs said. "The things you're asked to do are slightly different than in the middle of the order, obviously. Early in the game, especially, you need to work the count, see what the pitcher has to offer and get on base. I try to carry the same approach throughout the course of the game each time."

Mark Sheldon - Evaluation begins in earnest for Baker, Reds

"We're ready to start playing," Reds shortstop Paul Janish said. "The stuff we've done so far gets kind of monotonous. After the first week, we may not feel we're quite there in terms of playing games and ready for live pitching, but we're definitely anxious to get going."

The Reds currently have 54 players in camp and since camp opened on Feb. 16, the workouts have spread over multiple practice fields, batting cages and bullpens. Coaches are split up to run the varying drills and manager Dusty Baker tries to roam from field to field to see what he can.

thought i would share this here, I was just watching the St. Louis Cards vs NYM on the MLB network and there was an interesting dialogue among the announcers:

Josh Thole was hitting for the Mets and he had just singled after a long at-bat where he fouled off many pitches. One of the commentators praises Thole's style of choking up and making contact, however he also takes it upon himself to mention those who don't think strikeouts are important. He states that good things can happen when you put the ball in play.

Then interestingly enough, it becomes story time about Dave Stewart's philosophy as one of the commentators retells the story of how Dave Stewart once asked for a raise and he was told he strikes out too much, to which Stewart allegedly responded it helps the team because it prevents a double play.

The commentator then chuckles and says "Stewart had it all figured it out" in tongue in cheek fashion. Next batter proceeds to hit into 4-6-3 taylor-made inning ending double play.

Hilarity ensues.

Mark Sheldon - Arredondo still seeking command

Through three outings, Arredondo has hit two batters, issued three walks, struck out two and allowed three earned runs over 2 2/3 innings.

"I think we're all expecting a little bit much too soon. He hadn't pitched in 18 months almost," Reds manager Dusty Baker said after the game. "Everybody is still remembering how he threw the ball in Anaheim. We just have to be patient and keep putting him out there, especially if he feels healthy. If he feels healthy, he'll get it back together. After an operation, it's easier for some guys than other guys."

John Fay - Renteria not in the mix at third

Dusty Baker revealed a little more of the plan for Edgar Renteria. Renteria will start at second base today. But Baker said it’s merely an emergency plan. It sounds like the bulk of Renteria’s time will come at shortstop.

“As long as Brandon (Phillips is) healthy, whoever plays behind Brandon is not going to play a lot,” Baker said. “But what if something happens to Brandon. Renteria is going to play some at shortstop, too. How much he plays depends on how (Paul) Janish plays.”

It looks like Arredondo is about where Volquez was when he first came back. I don't look for him to be productive until the second half of the season. Most players are very erratic for about half a season when they first return from TJ surgery. It'll be nice to have a new arm to add to the 'pen for the stretch run.

Of course people didn't like Benard. He was a decent ball player, but he made most of his money while being terrible. He got paid $8.4MM to put up a .247/.290/.356/.646 line over two years that covered only 208 plate appearances.

In the days between his starts, Cueto was an early fixture at the ballpark, running up and down the steps and around the concourses. His conditioning improved his legs and stamina and allowed him to go deeper into games. Cueto threw his first complete game last season -- a one-hitter in a 9-0 Reds rout of the Pirates on May 11.

"I was working hard because I knew that it was my last year before I had to talk about money," Cueto said. "You guys saw the results. I continued doing it when I was in the Dominican. Dusty Baker told me today that he will make sure to rest Edgar Renteria early in the season especially in cold weather to keep him healthy

The defending NL Central Champions Cincinnati Reds players remain humble and continue their top level professional approach in preparation

This Reds team is filled with high character...of course that goes well with deep pitching, great defense and an impressive offense.

He made it back after the All-Star break last season, starting 12 games (4-3, 4.31). Best thing about that is it gave him a jump start on 2011. "Last year he was overthrowing a lot, and his command suffered," Reds pitching coach Bryan Price says. "This kid is a strike thrower who gets in trouble when he tries to do too much. Article by Paul Daugherty on the leadoff spot.

The notion that Stubbs is better suited hitting down in the order, where he can use his power to drive in runs, evidently doesn’t count for as much. I don’t want Drew Stubbs bunting or looking for walks. I want him pounding balls into the gaps, when he can really use his speed.

Baker doesn’t quite agree. “If I bat him two in the order, he can’t run and he’s my fastest runner,’’ Baker says. “Say I bat him seventh and he steals, they’re going to walk (the eighth batter) to get to the pitcher.’’ Still, Baker admits, “There’s no perfect solution. Most of the time, it’s short dudes who can run.’’

From what little I've seen of Sappelt, I think this is an apt comparison. Compact, quick swing, line drive machine.
