Was surprised to see this on Jamie Ramsey's blog:

"The Reds have unconditionally released Sean Connor, Nathan Driessen, Joel Ernst, William Harford, Evan Hildenbrandt, Trey Manz, Jose Marizan, Junior Martinez, Tom Nurre and Jeff Taylor."

Hildenbrandt is, to me, the most surprising. I assume it's based on health issues. Nathan Driessen is another one I wouldn't have anticipated; not sure why you'd release a successful lefthander (3.56 career ERA) at the age of 19. Joel Ernst pitched well last year in the AZL, but he's 24. Junior Martinez is alleged to be a very hard thrower, but has rarely pitched well.

Too bad about Hildenbrandt. Kid barely got a chance.

I was most surprised about Driessen. Thought he was doing well.

I liked Conner's profile when he was drafted, I guess he just didn't have the talent to back it up. A bit surprised about Driessen & Hildenbrandt as well.

What happen to Tyler Cline and Why

Perhaps Driessen requested his release to return to Australia. It's not unheard of among young international players.

It seemed just like yesterday that Hildenbrandt was talked about as the next big thing here. Granted, injuries have hampered him and his development significantly, but still.

Martinez was indeed a hard thrower, I saw him hit 99 and 100mph a handful of times in Dayton last year

But that was on the stadium gun so take that for what it's worth

The Dayton gun, for the most part, is fairly accurate. With that said, I saw him top out at 97 a bunch, but never higher. Granted I only saw him 5 or 6 times.

You know what's funny? Joel Ernst and Nate Driessen were best and second-best, respectively, in K:BB ratio for the entire organization. They both have fairly small sample sizes, but I think it's still somewhat interesting.

I see the Reds released Tyler Cline and Daniel Guerrero

Wow, how strange is that? Regarding Cline, that is. The last two years, he had ERAs of 2.09 and 2.17. Obviously, there's a lot more to it. His inning total was significantly reduced last year, down to 29. Don't know if it was injury or other issues.

There have been questions of Cline's maturity. That may be a factor.
