First, thanks to Oxblood for the idea and the OF tourney. I'll be taking it from here. I'm not sure what I'll do when we get to pitchers, but for each position at catcher and IF, I'm gonna take the top 20 by B-R WAR on their list of top 1,000 position players by WAR, and then leave the other dozen spots open for nominations, and those will be the 32 nominees.

Once we get enough nominees, I'll start the catcher thread, I plan on making each round last a week as Ox did.

So, the 1st 20 nominees for catcher:

1. Johnny Bench
2. Ivan Rodriguez
3. Carlton Fisk
4. Gary Carter
5. Yogi Berra
6. Mike Piazza
7. Bill Dickey
8. Mickey Cochrane
9. Ted Simmons
10. Gabby Hartnett
11. Jorge Posada
12. Wally Schang
13. Thurman Munson
14. Bill Freehan
15. Darrell Porter
16. Ernie Lombardi
17. Joe Mauer
18. Jason Kendall
19. Charlie Bennett
20. Roy Campanella

Joe Torre, Buck Ewing, and Roger Bresnahan all had a lot of time at catcher and made the WAR list above some of those that I have here, but they didn't quite play enough games, or a large enough % of their games at catcher for me to put them here. If you feel differently, nominate them!

Varitek?

Should we be realistic and just give Bench a bye to the finals?

I nominate a pair of Hall of Famers not on the original list: Josh Gibson and Cincinnati's own Buck Ewing.

Joe Torre probably should be there, even though his greatest season (1971) came as a third baseman.
Elston Howard is probably one of the top 20 or so catchers ever, and was the AL MVP in 1963.
Lance Parrish had some big years with the Tigers.
Wally Schang was a good catcher in the 1920s.

32. Josh Gibson (-.--)

Schang is already on the list at #12.

Gibson never played MLB due to segregation, but he is in the HOF so I included him. I am putting him as #32 on the ballot though, as I don't see a better way to do it. Yes, that puts him against Bench, but that's too bad for him.

1 spot left, next nomination gets it.
