Very. I was going to go to one or the other, but now it looks like neither. Both places are supposed to start seeing rain around 6pm. That means there is a chance Louisville could get underway with a 6:35 start time, but it is supposed to storm all night there.

Where did you hear that? Weather.com shows a 30% chance of "Few Showers" in Louisville from 6 - 9, the bad weather will be after midnight from what I heard... I can't imagine a cancellation from that...

It must have changed since I checked at 2am last night. I hope you are right.

Still, while the % isn't high, the hour by hour forecast is showing rain at 7pm through the night at weather.com right now (http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/graph/USKY1096?begHour=18&begDay=97#hhView).

Well, it does not sound very strong or non-scattered during the game time, so I am not too worried.

Mudcats were a lot of fun tonight until Joseph imploded. I really hate it for the guy. Boxberger was solid. Freeman did his job. Joseph topped out at 91 a couple of times but his pitches didn't fool anybody.

Mike Costanzo was money tonight. The guy hit the wall on the fly his first three at bats. He tripled and doubled twice. He drew a walk his last time at bat. None of his shots were pulled, all to center or slightly left center. If he could pull one, the right field wall is not nearly as high as the rest of the outfield.

Miguel Rojas was brutal at the plate going 0-4 with three K's.

This one got away. Try again tomorrow night. I really like this lineup and the staff is going to be good as well.

I was at the Bats opening day. It was one of the biggest crowds I have ever seen at Slugger Field - certainty the longest ticket line. Lots of changes at Slugger Field this year - I liked the new team store and improved concession stands, but missed the long-time PA announcer, edy's ice cream, and pinstriped jersey's.

Scott Carroll pitched a decent game - not overpowering, but he got the job done. None of the relief pitchers looked good - Herrera and Krebs were especially awful.

Mesoraco looked good, and was hitting everything hard. Frazier statistically had a good night at the plate, but he looked awful at the plate - I guess when you swing hard at everything, you will sometimes get lucky.

Looking forward to seeing how Klinker pitches tomorrow - I hope he can go back to his 2009 form.

Did anyone watch the game on milb.tv? If so, how was the quality, they are streaming it at a much faster rate. Is it in widescreen?

My opening day wrap up:

Cook and Costanzo shine, but Mudcats fall in opener

The Carolina Mudcats opened its 21st season in Zebulon on Thursday night against the Mobile Baybears in front of a small 2,884 opening-night crowd. Former big league Daryl Thompson got the nod for manager David Bell as the ace of the Mudcats starting rotation. The former big leaguer didn’t disappoint, allowing only four hits over five innings while punching out four. The only black mark on Thompson’s outing was a first inning home run to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

Six-year free agent signing David Cook impressed in his first game in the Reds organization as the left fielder hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Mudcats a 3-1 lead. Third baseman Mike Costanzo started off 2011 with a bang, 3-3 with two doubles and a triple while driving in one in the opener.

Thompson was relieved by former first rounder Brad Boxberger. The righty threw two scoreless frames before Bell turned the ball over to setup man Justin Freeman. Freeman surrendered a single run in his only inning of work. Left-handed closer Donnie Joseph, with a 4-2 lead, came to shut the door on the Baybears in the ninth. A do or die play to shortstop Miguel Rojas that resulted in a base hit started the unraveling for Joseph and the Mudcats. Joseph (0-1) ended up giving five earned runs, including a three-run home run to Goldschmidt, giving the Baybears a 7-4 lead and eventual win to start the 2011 campaign.

The Baybears (1-0) and the Mudcats (0-1) will face off again Friday night a 7:15.

In Sweet's postgame interview he mentioned there were a couple balls in the late innings that "didn't get caught." I assume one was Alonso's. Despite his bat, if he's a liability in LF, he won't be manning that spot in Cincy, IMO. But I give the guy a lot of credit for pushing himself to learn the position.

Come on.... the Reds are playing Jonny Gomes out in left right now. He is a liability and he doesn't have a great bat. Whether Alonso ever cuts it in left, I don't know, but because some is a liability out there doesn't mean he won't play there.

I guess it comes down to whether Alonso can be even as good as Gomes out there. I haven't seen Alonso play LF, so I can' say with any certainty. But I do feel certain that Gomes can cover more ground than Alonso, and Gomes has an OK arm.

If he's worse than Gomes, I don't see him getting the spot over guys like Heisey and Sappelt, come 2012, or even later in 2011, if Gomes tanks at the plate. I don't think the Reds management would do that to their pitchers.

Article on Dave Sappelt:

Bats manager Rick Sweet said the 5-foot-9,193-pound Sappelt's overall game needs refining.

“We want to really focus on base-stealing, his drag-bunting, playing shallower in center field,” Sweet said. “It's not that he is not capable of going to the big leagues right now — he is — but we definitely have things we can work on to get better.”

From Baseball America:

Devin Mesoraco, c, Reds: Was last year’s sudden breakout from Mesoraco a fluke? That doesn’t seem likely, as Mesoraco battled wrist and finger injuries throughout his career until last season, when scouts came away more impressed with his bat speed, power and ability to square up the ball routinely than they had seen in the past. Mesoraco, 22, went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double yesterday for Triple-A Louisville, where he could repeat his 25-plus home run season from a year ago.

Article on Dave Sappelt:

Sensible, whether or not the bat was real was never the question. Stealing turns him into a dangerous major league leadoff hitter. Honing his defense will seal up the hole that Gomes is in LF.

Sappelt in LF and Mesoraco at C are going to be monsters for us when they come up next year...

Sappelt- LF
Phillips (if we can resign)- 2B
Votto- 1B
Mesoraco- C
Bruce- RF
Rolen-3B
Stubbs- CF
Janish/Cozart- SS

The best lineup/defense in baseball? Sappelt, Phillips, and Stubbs are both good for 20 HR. Mesoraco/Rolen for 25. Bruce/Votto for 35. Cozart has pop too, if he platoons with Janish. No holes in the defense (except for the starts Francisco/Alonso will get), and at least half if not all of the lineup has gold glove potential.

Again, I can not remember the Alonso misplay that everyone is talking about. Dorn and Hermida both made bad plays in the 7 run inning - are you sure you are not thinking of either of those? I do remeber Alonso making a nice diving catch early in the game. You can see that and other highlights here: http://www.fox41.com/category/163829/fox-41-video?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=5734822&flvUri=&partnerclipid=

Alonso did misplay a grounder earlier in the game. As for the one GOYA is talking about, I know that there was a double to left field that he seemed to take a bad route on. It was a single either way IMO, but the route he took let it go to the wall for a double instead of being cut off in the alley. Perhaps that is the one he is walking about. On the other side, Alonso did make a nice play on a liner off the wall where he bare handed the ricochet off the wall and turned and fired a one hopper to the second baseman.

Not sure if you meant to add Sappelt in there since you said both, but if you did.... I would have to say that while I think Sappelt has top end 20 HR pop, he is probably more likely to be a 15 HR guy.

I don't remember, how many HR did he have last season? I agree that he's more impressive for his high OBP, but I remember him having 20+ in the minors last season.

The "both" was a typo from an earlier version of my post, my bad. Sappelt is meant to be there.

Sappelt has a career high of 10 HR's in the minors in a single season.

Thanks, I think I was getting his HR numbers mixed with Mesoraco's. Still, having at least some pop at the top of the order is useful.

(And the best lineup/defense in baseball point still stands imo. Even if it's not the best in either of the categories, it's almost certainly the best combination)

Yeah, defensively that outfield with Sappelt, Stubbs and Bruce would be death to any fly ball. So much range.
