First game thread I have ever started. Let's hope we win so it's not the last.

First game thread I have ever started. Let's hope we win so it's not the last.

Surprises to me are Rolen playing and Bruce in the 7 hole.

What surpsirses me (mildly) is that Janish isn't playing. Leake is supposed to be this ground ball king. Seems that I'd want Votto-Phillips-Janish-Rolen in there whenever he's on the mound. I actually thought they would rest Rolen last night with flyball Arroyo pitching, specifically so he could be in there today.

Bruce should be on the bench. He had one hit on a fastball all series. If opponents throw him anything but curves they should fire their scouts

BRUCE 7TH: Jay Bruce was seventh in the lineup for the first time. Edgar Renteria hit sixth.

“With the left-hander, we’ve got some guys who hit (Joe) Saunders pretty good,” Baker said. “Renteria hits him pretty good. Bruce hits him well. But he’s kind of in-between now.”

2nd time already that Rolen has played a day game after a night game. I'm surprised. The word was that he'd be around 120 games this year -- that's a day off every 4 games. We're at game 9, and he's started 8.

Renteria has 5 AB's vs Saunders in the last 5 years according to a quick glimpse at the MLB preview page. Jay Bruce has 4.

Playing Rolen and sitting Janish makes little sense but I made my peace with Dusty being a clubhouse guy and not a tactician a while back.

v. Saunders

Bruce: 2-4, HR
Edgar: 3-5
Gomes: 3-8, 3B
Hernandez: 7-17, HR, 2B
Rolen: 2-5, 2B
Votto: 1-6
Phillips: 1-8
Stubbs: 3-6, HR

I think Janish should spell Rolen...when Rolen does sit. Which would make Cairo a Phil Gagliano type of bench player. He only PH's and is pinch run for when he does get on.

I am having to reboot my dvr. Has the game started yet? Is it still on MLB Extra Innings free preview?

I'll always prefer that Janish starts...but it's pretty hard to argue with the moves Dusty's made thus far. He's been pushing the right buttons now for the past year and a half. He's earned the benefit of the doubt in my book.

Brandon has been criticized in the past for not hustling. Now he hustles and you get on his case?

If you are being aggressive on the bases, sometimes you are going to run into outs. That comes with the territory. If Upton's throw was off line then Brandon scores. Of course doing something like having Hernandez score from 1st on a double with no outs would be stupid. You may not be able to quantify aggressive baserunning turning into runs but it's clear it puts pressure on a team like MIL or AZ or HOU who throw the ball around a lot.

He doesn't have the stuff to put a hitter away when he needs to. Too many balls in play almost inevitably lead to base hits and run scoring opportunities.

Leake showed last year that, once there was tape to study of him, that his stuff just isn't ML quality on a consistent enough basis. He'll have nights where his command is pinpoint and he can be successful, but it's such a low margin for error that he simply cannot be counted on.

Sorry, just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. He DOES have the stuff to put hitters away. And a groundball pitcher can most definitely be successful. Other than that 1 pitch (and the subsequent walk) he looked very good. His location was quite good. Got the ball up a few innings, but controlled the ab's consistently. I'll take Leake over Volquez right now without a doubt.

Agreed. It takes a lot of craftiness to get through a line-up 3 times without a little stuff to fall back on. I still think Leake has potential to be a good starter in an Arroyo kind of a way, but lets be serious. Most guys start their first full season at Low A and move-up from there. If he spends 2011 in AAA, he's still way ahead of the game.

Yep. Leake just had a bit of bad luck prior to that dinger. I simply don't get the argument that he lacks "stuff". Simply not buying it. You don't have to have a 95 mph fastball to qualify as "stuff". He brings his fastball up there at 90 to 92 or so. He's got wicked movement on his pitches and he's got excellent control. That's "stuff" in my book.

Still say that DBacks are lucky Reds didn't score several more runs in the early innings. The second inning, when Phillips was thrown out at home; the third was similar.

Frustrating.

As for Leake - last year, even when going well, he had a tendency to fall apart rather suddenly. Too bad it happened today, but you need a quick hook with him.
