Juan Duran is now hitting .226/.349/.453 - .802 OPS. Not bad for a 19-year old in the Midwest League. The batting average is low but he's walking at a very good rate and is hitting for power.

Dayton won 4-0.

Freeman getting hammered. Bell goes to get him. 9-5 Smokies and they are still batting. Tabor and Freeman were way easy tonight. Five runs scored with two out in the inning. Same story...different night. Medina in to try and get the third out.

Carolina gets one back in the top of the 8th.

Perez thrown out at second on a ball he hit off the wall on a bounce. Sounds like Perez may have assumed too much when the ball left the bat.

Josh Smith has now pitched 66.2 innings in his career and struck out 78, with an ERA of 1.44 and a WHIP under 1.00 . . . I'm not sure where he'd be if we did our top 40 over again, but he'd be there somewhere, and it wouldn't take 40.

Louisville loses 3-2. Lewis tripled with one out in the eighth but Cozart grounded out, Sappelt walked and Alonso fanned. In the ninth, Frazier singled for his second hit, but that was all.

Game over, 10-6 Tennessee. The Smokies pounded out 18 hits tonight. Bullpen failed miserably.

Justin Lehr will go tomorrow night. Providing safe travel, my wife and I plan to be there.

Bakersfield seems to have returned to earth. Tonight, no hits after five, and a 4-0 deficit.

One of the worst offensive efforts by the Bats that I have seen. The hitters were off balance all night. Dorn was getting fastballs thrown past him. Nobody seemed to be having decent swings at anything. And some swings at balls way out of the zone. Maybe somebody threw a party last night.

As mentioned earlier, Juan Duran now has an .802 OPS on the season. Over his last 10 games his OPS stands at .933, with three homers and eight walks during that span.

Yorman Rodriguez is hitting .324/.359/.541 - .900 OPS over his last 10 games. Not bad for the youngest player in the league.

From the DDN:

Smith had nine strikeouts through three innings and finished with 12, two short of the team record set by the long-forgotten Josh Hall in 2001.

“He had good command of his breaking ball — that was the key,” one scout said. “He got ahead in the count with fastballs, and then he would throw a backdoor curve to lefties. To righties, he would throw the slider in the dirt for the strikeout.”

When the list was made, there was no indication he would be a starter either, which is going to diminish the value of a guy some. Still, Smith has good stuff and the numbers aren't a giant surprise (they are a bit of a surprise given how good they are, but him posting good numbers shouldn't be a big surprise).

Smith is a couple months away from turning 24 in the Midwest League. I think some of the excitement around here should be tapered a little bit.

Good point.

Love the start.

Hope he throws like this as he moves up levels, but he'll need to move up to AA for me to get all that excited, especially at his age.
