Dayton trails 1-0 after 1 1/2. Corcino has given up a run on two hits. Dragons have CF leading off, SS batting 2nd and the C in the 8-spot, so Dusty is smiling. Drew Poulk had a base knock in his first AB of the season.

Louisville's first pitch is 605 ET. Cochran on the mound for the Bats.

The Mudcats are on tap soon (2 PM). Tim Gustafson of the 7.28 ERA will twirl for the muddy ones. Carolina sports an awe-inspiring 14-35 record, which probably explains why someone with a 7.28 ERA is starting for them.

They will be walking the streets of Bakersfield at 130 PM PT today. The ToBeDetermined brothers will be squaring off. I love the nickname - The Blaze.

Corcino gives up a trifecta of two-out singles in the bottom of the second. Dayton behind 2-zip.
In the top of the third, the Dragons use a strikeout and a double play to remain two down.

Dragons' game has turned into a snoozefest. Corcino's line after 4 IP is 6H 2ER 1BB 5K.

Gustafson has an interesting first. Walk, fly out, error on pickoff, walk, wild pitch, strike out, strike out. No runs.

Valaika 2B
Alonso 1B
Francisco 3B
Frazier DH
Hermida RF
Mesoraco C
Dorn 1B
Clevlan CF

Brandon Hynick RHP (Bats debut)

Don't usually post here, but I ran across this on the Bats twitter. Thanks for the updates.

Tim Crabbe wiggles out of a bases loaded jam mainly of his own making. He walked the first two and then an error by the SS loaded the bases. Crabbe strikes out the next two and gets a fly ball to end the inning.

Probably two of the top five or six minor league catchers are playing in the Bats game with Jesus Montero catching for the Yankees. Montero was the #3 overall prospect and #1 catcher on BA's top 100 prospect list. Mesoraco was ranked #64 overall, and the #6 ranked catcher.

Bakersfield having a rough time of it. They are down 7-2 through 4. Means with a bomb. Crabbe roughed up for 6 er in 3 1/3 innings.

A big Carolina victory is bound to involve some strangeness. And so there were these two statistical items:

Rojas drove in five runs without an extra-base hit (three singles and a sac fly).

Phipps was 1 for 2 with four runs scored (three BB).

Also worth noting: Travis Webb has been sensational since he was moved to the bullpen. Today: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Total (5 games): 14 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 8 BB, 24 K.

Louisville is tied at 0-0 in the 4th. Hynick has allowed 1 hit. Bats have two hits, one from Danny Dorn (with a SB) and the other came from Hermida (followed by a Mesoraco GIDP).

Hynick has put up very respectable numbers at each level until his most recent stops at AAA Charlotte. Would be nice to see the Ohio kid get straightened out now that he is in the Reds system.

Thanks, I was wondering what was going on when I saw the game was in the fourth inning and their were no updates from you or Doug lol. Looks like you have the game updates just in time for the Reds game. :D

Have you been watching the game? Did Hynick look as good as he pitched those first 5 innings?

Bakersfield wins in the bottom of the ninth on a double by Chris Richburg, single by Ryan LaMarre and walkoff single by Brodie Greene. Tzu-Kai Chiu and Andrew Bowman pitched 5.2 innings of excellent relief.

Could this be Champman's second straight 2 inning appearance? Could they be stretching him out to start or is this just them trying to get him some innings?

GOYA

I doubt this is an effort to stretch him to start. Seems like they would start him for that. Since they can't count on extra innings, he would be limited to 2 IP here.

Baseball really tests your patience a lot. What the heck is the matter with this guy?

He has troubles repeating his mechanics, which means his release point is all over the place, which means his control is going to suck when he is struggling with that release point.

GOYA

I think it's his head. When things start going badly he lets it get to him and it just goes downhill from there. Mechanics are a part of it but it's his head that controls his mechanics.

Why don't they let him start? Seems like they don't have the patience to let this guy grow as a pitcher. Let him start in the minors and throw his pitches and repeat his delivery every fifth day. It seems they are so in love with his arm, they haven't seen what he is as a pitcher. He is a young guy with bad command who cannot repeat his delivery, and cannot pitch back to back. The only thing to me that his major league ready is his velocity. I would start him and Boxberger while I am at it until they prove they cannot be starters. At a minimum it would allow them to throw and work on all of their pitches.

Here here! Prior to this year's collapse of starting depth, I was okay with relief for Chapman. No. Now it makes sense to do what you said and get some rhythm and certainty for Chapman so he can sooner gain the role of ace this organization needs him to be. With Bray shutting lefties down so well, we don't need him in that role. If we need a lefty at the deadline, pick one up then. Chapman's role as a dominant starter for this team, perhaps as early as September but definitely in 2012-2016, is most valuable. We all know it will be a journey to get there so starting now is the best course. In hindsight, relief should've been out of the question this year.
