Who are the best players still available? Who are you hoping the Reds draft?

John Curtiss, RHP, Southlake Carroll HS: The 6-foot-4 ace consistently throws 90-91 mph, with a nice slider and changeup. He went 7-0 with a 0.91 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 53 2/3 innings in 2011

Skyler Ewing, C/INF, Arlington HS: He finished his high school career with consecutive double-digit homer seasons, belting 12 as a junior and 10 as a senior. The Rice signee hit .443 with 33 RBIs and a .987 slugging percentage this year.

Are those Reds picks or were they who you hope for?

I wonder what the average height of our pitching picks this year have been. Seems like a lot of them are well over 6 feet.

DON BOSCO PREP PRIDE

3 DBP grads drafted in the past 4 years by Cincy. Big ups.

AS A JUNIOR (2011)
Started four games and appeared in five before injuring his elbow ... underwent Tommy John surgery in April ... finished 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA in 18.1 innings ... allowed 14 runs - 12 earned - on 18 hits while walking eight and fanning 11 ... started at Florida (2/24) and went 3.0 innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit while striking out two ... picked up his only win of the season at Bethune-Cookman (3/4) after allowing four runs in 6.0 innings ... pitched 4.1 innings at Florida State (3/11) before the elbow injury sidelined him.

Drafted in 17th rd out of HS. Numbers look awful at BC, however.

BA says he was a top 5 rounder prior to the surgery and is now likely headed back to school.

Michael Dennhart might be the type of pick to go over slot for. If he was projected a top 5 rounder before the injury? What does anyone think?

I love my Ironmen, so I hope so. TJ doesn't scare me as much as it used to.

Interesting bit from a local publication

http://beachcarolina.com/2011/05/25/morehead-city-marlins-add-five-to-roster/

Kimmel, also a sophomore, has been a do-it-all player for the Pioneers in his two seasons. As a freshman, he was the starting shortstop and pitched as the closer. This season, however, when the team’s starting catcher went down with an injury, Kimmel volunteered to help the team behind the dish, though he had not caught since he was twelve years old. The 6-feet tall, 185-pounder, who has committed to continue his collegiate career at Stetson University in the fall, has started at catcher all season and been very impressive both on defense and at the plate. Kimmel is batting .361 and is a perpetual gap hitter, smacking seventeen doubles and three triples on the year.

I was about to post that the Reds needed some catchers to catch all these new pitchers.

Yard is an awful name for a pitcher, almost as bad as Homer.

I think it is Suiter on the other.

Suiter has a decent write-up on BA, says he is a Santa Clara commit. Above avg runner, compact swing and gap power.

I think being able to play baseball for a living might be one of the only reasons I'd want to leave Hawaii if I was one of those kids.

Took a moment to look at players drafted from Missouri, my wife's home state. I see there is a Henke, but it's not Tom's son. I've messaged Tom's brother to see if it's a relative since the Henkes are my wife's second cousin. Then I noticed a kid named Fick, also from central Missouri, and I know my wife has a great grandmother (or maybe a generation further back) whose maiden name was Fick. I tease her that there are only ten family names in that part of the state.

After a little research, I see Travis Henke is Tom Henke's nephew, so he's my kids' 3rd cousin. Now I wonder about Fick.

Amlung got a little love from BA.

After redshirting in 2009, Amlung blossomed into Louisville's top starter. He's not physical at 6 feet and 174 pounds, and he doesn't have overwhelming stuff, yet he gets outs and misses bats.

Top FB recruit, sounds like a tough sign.

But he also wants to play baseball. Told his football schools he wanted to be able to do both. Would be a great sign IMO, but the Reds would have to shell out some serious cash to make it happen.

I imagine they want to offer them all a contract, but they probably aren't going to offer what it is going to take. Several of these guys, on talent, should have gone in the top 5 rounds.
