Tom Seaver pitched a complete-game six-hitter with 7 K's to get the win for the Reds. Mets LHP Ray Searage made his major-league debut in this game. This was the final game before the infamous 1981 strike wiped out two months of the season. The Reds were in second place in the NL West with a 35-21 record, a half-game behind the Dodgers, who were 36-21. However, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn would declare the first half-season over, and awarded the Dodgers a postseason appearance even though the Dodgers and Reds were tied in the loss column.

I remember after Kuhn's absurdly horrible solution to this situation, arguing with my then best friend Victor that this wasn't a big deal, as the Reds would easily win the second half. So young, so naive...

I always wondered what MLB whould have done if the Reds hadn't have had that rained out game against the Giants, that I mentioned in an erlier thread, that I went to back in May of that season. If the Reds had went on and won that game this would have made a tie. I always assumed the Dodgers and Reds would have had a one game playoff to start the 2nd half.
BTW I thought like your friend. I thought the Reds would win the 2nd half anyway.
