Prior to the game the Reds traded 1B Reggie Jefferson to the Indians for INF/OF Tim Costo. Due to a clerical error on his part, Reds GM Bob Quinn had recently inadvertently designated Jefferson for assignment. Tribe GM Hank Peters, who was friends with Quinn, worked out a trade as a courtesy so that the Reds wouldn't be left completely empty-handed, and sent Indians 1990 first-round draft pick Costo to the Reds for Jefferson.
