The Mudcats had thrown 22 consecutive innings without giving up a run until a few minutes ago. I started to post earlier but didn't want to jinx the guys.

Eric Campbell is 2-4 tonight with a double and home run. The guy is batting .302. He is getting comfortable at the plate with additional playing time. His glove was already getting it done. If he continues to hit this guy is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

No his head hurts. Concussion symptoms. MRI was negative.

Thompson really pitched well tonight. His change was 20 MPG slower than his fastball and it was making guys look silly.

Looking at his numbers at A+ this year, it's ridiculous it took this long for him to get a legit chance with a struggling Carolina team. Hopefully he continues to mash. The Reds definitely need quality depth at 3B. Rolen is done after 2012 IMO. Francisco is the likely successor, but he's so inconsistent (offensively and especially defensively) that he's far from a sure thing. I was hoping Frazier was the 3B of the future, but he hardly plays there because of Francisco. I'm just very intrigued with Campbell. How is his defense? I've just followed his stats closely, but have never seen him play. (Oh, I see you say his D was already impressive. Was he also good defensively this season at Bakersfield?)

Love your updates, GOYA. Thanks as always ... and great to see the Bats win a close one. Thompson is still very young and has the chance to be a decent No. 5 MLB starter.

Odd that, over the last couple days, Dayton has been hitting like crazy--what's gotten into those boys?--and Carolina has been pitching. Meanwhile, Travis Webb extends his streak of being fairly remarkable over the past month. Unfortunately, Boxberger had a rare off night, and it cost the Mudcats.

Am really impressed with Duran's progress.

Question to any one who has seen recent Hamilton AB's, is there a noticable difference that Hamilton has made recently (regarding swing mechanics/plate approach) or is he just seeing the ball well right now? Is he still switch hitting?

Maybe I place too much faith in minor-league managers, especially at the lowest levels, but when a kid who just turned 17 is batting cleanup for the DSL Reds, in spite of hitting only .163, it suggests that somebody really likes him. RF Aristides Aquino, who is 6-foot-4, hit his second HR today. A guy to be curious about, at the least.

The HR that Donald Lutz hit was an absolute BOMB

It hit halfway up the awning that covers the party deck in left center field

My pleasure. As always. I wish I had more time to devote to it.

The Mudcats ended up splitting a pair in Jackson. Carolina won 9-3 in the first game and the Generals won the second game 1-0 behind Andrew Carraway's one hitter. The game was a seven inning affair. Travis Webb started for Carolina and pitched well going four innings and striking out four in game two, no free passes and no runs. Boxberger took the loss giving up one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Carolina leads the series 2-1 with a Saturday doubleheader scheduled to close out the first half. The Mudcats are 21-47 and need to sweep the DH to match Chattanooga's 2002 half record of 23-47 as the worst half since the Mudcats entered the Southern League in 1991. If Carolina can at least split the doubleheader tonight it will be the first series win for the team since July 22-26 of last year.

I really can't say on to that. I love his work since he's been here. Carolina has a situation right now where there are three guys that deserve playing time and for the most part, they play two positions. Soto, Costanzo, and Campbell are all infielders. Soto is the primary first baseman. For Campbell to play Costanzo generally will be moved to first base and Soto will sit. Last night Campbell played first base in the second game of the doubleheader. In one sense I guess this is a luxury for the manager but in another sense I believe it is a problem that any three of these guys are having to sit at any time.

If the Reds are never going to give Dorn a chance, which it sure looks that way, trade the guy for prospects for the lower levels. Move Costanzo to Louisville at first base. He deserves a promotion in my opinion anyway and has played many games at first. That would open third up for Campbell in AA and give Soto the first base job full time...if that is where the Reds are going with him.
