RHP Wes Mugarian is getting the Opening Night start for Billings.

Mugarian was a fifth-round draft choice by the Cincinnati Reds in 2010 out of a Pensacola, Fla., high school. Mugarian made five starts in the Arizona League last summer.

"He's solid," Kelly said of Mugarian. "He was a young high school kid that was drafted last year. He's got a strong arm."

Surprised there haven't been more draft signings with the short-season leagues starting tonight. I'd expect to see people like Cole Green and Ryan Wright signed by now.

Gotcha. Louisville is not still playing, are they?

Would like to see Rosa get signed and start playing as soon as possible in the AZL. From what I've read, he needs all the experience and seasoning he can get. Stephenson I understand will take some time, and that's OK- his arm could probably use the rest.

Juan Francisco shocks the world by taking a lead-off walk but then Alonso, Frazier and Dorn go down in order.

Edd Roush

By the way, that is only Juan Francisco's 6th walk of the year.

Reineke relieved Cochran after five. I wasn't aware that Reineke had been moved to the bullpen.

Interesting. No Silva or Buckley. Easy to see where Wright would replace Muenster, and Silva (should) replace Muller or Read.

Question is, does Buckley play 1B or DH? I'd like Arias to get reps at 3B, and apparently Lohman was sent down to play SS everyday. Does anyone have any insight as to what might happen with these guys?

Meanwhile, the AZL roster looks pretty thin at the moment. I'd assume Stephenson and Rosa will join them in time. I wonder if Humberto Valor or Oliviel Florentino will be playing there this summer?

Bats go down in order in the 7th.

Amezcua looks to be repeating the AZL this year. I guess he's the presumed "ace" until Stephenson signs.

Edd Roush

Hermida, Mesoraco and Francisco go down 1-2-3 in the 8th.

Jerry Gil starts off the 9th with four straight balls...

The Bats follow up the walk with a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.

There are some interesting aspects to the AZL Reds' lineup. Brandon Dailey makes his professional debut batting second and playing 2B. The cleanup hitter is 1B Carlos Santana, who had a terrific season last year for the DSL Reds. Humberto Valor is the SS and hits fifth. And the Opening Day pitcher is the Italian kid, Luca Panerati.

I believe Carlos' last name is Sanchez.

Billings falls 9-4. Most notable performance of the night--El'Hajj Muhammad (who is coming off an excellent first season): 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Dayne Read and Robert Maddox had two hits apiece.

Reineke gives up three runs in the top of the 8th.

Bats had errors on 3 consecutive plays in that inning. Francisco, Valaika and Mesoraco.

Ouch. Thanks for the illumination, GOYA. It was hard to figure out what was happening in the Gametracker. Didn't Reinke start the mess though, with a couple of walks?

He did give up 2 walks but he didn't give up a hit in that inning. There were two double play balls that were botched. And I need to correct myself. The middle error was given to Cozart, not Valaika.

Ugly night for Billings pitchers. Mugarian and Muhammed managed to achieve the hat trick of recording a wild pitch, balk and hit batter. Porfirio Martinez missed out on hitting a guy, but made up for it with two wild pitches. Ouch.

Overall, those two pitched well.
