The Reds game with the New York Yankees was postponed due to rain. The Reds will play a day-night doubleheader tomorrow. The regularly scheduled game will be at 12:35 p.m. The makeup for tonight’s game will be at 7:10 p.m.

Why not just play on Thursday afternoon? Both teams have a regular off day and both teams have quick flights to their next series (NYC and Baltimore).

I am actually kind of glad, wasn't looking forward to sitting through a bunch of potential rain delays.

On a related note, does anyone need tickets to the 12:35 game tomorrow? I have 2, possibily 4 in section 521 that I cannot get off work to use. 30 face value, just make me an offer as they are basically a sunk cost as this point in time.

This probably means a lot of lost revenue for the Reds.

So the Reds have to play the Yankees and won't get the big financial bump that makes losing the games easier to swallow.

Why is that? If it's a day-night DH, they clear out the stadium entirely and bring in a new crowd for the evening game. Both games will still be sold out, with their own sets of fans buying food/beer/merch.

The Rockies used to do this all the time during the Coors Field sell-out streak.

The problem is, what if one of the games (particularly Game 1) goes extras?

Most fans won't be able to attend the day game, and that means lost parking and concession revenue. Plus paying everyone who works there overtime. That's probably around $500K to $1M lost.

Given the way the Reds handled this series in selling tickets in forcing people to buy tickets to three other series in addition to the Yankees series, it doesn't hurt my feelings in the least if they lose money.

Well, watch stubhub and craigslist for some cheap tickets that may come available. For those in the area.

I kinda feel the same way. I know this is an acceptable practice these days, but it still rubs me the wrong way. Sure it's the Yankees, but it's not like you're seeing Ruth, Gehrig or the Yankee Clipper.

I understand the angst, but no one forced anyone to buy anything.

Supply and demand, baby. You bought those tickets because you wanted to.

This whole postponement is a joke. It wasn't raining when they postponed and it isn't raining now... hasn't been for three or four hours. Why not get in as much as they can? I've never seen them do this before... when there's no rain.

I was going to say the same thing. I've seen them start a game when there was a line of bad t-storms on the Ohio-Indiana border. Tonight, there is rain around but a lot of gaps in the weather as well. The parking lot here at CinFin is dry.

Awfully odd to postpone a game when it is not raining and there is not a huge, nasty stormfront moving in.

Maybe they just wanted to give Cueto's neck an extra day to heal.

I'm wondering what was up with this decision also. If this happened in STL, it would have sinister written all over it.

Was it to get Cueto another day to rest his neck? Is something else afoot?

This was far too early of a cancellation despite weather reports that didn't ever indicate that tonight would be a complete washout.

What gives?

I don't see how it could have anything to do with Cueto. I'm under the impression these decisions are made by the umpiring crew.

BTW, it's still not raining.

They were part of the power pack. I guess I wasn't "forced" to buy them. But required to if you wanted the power pack. Which was pretty much the only way to guarantee getting opening day tickets without shelling out the dough for some 20 game package.

I'm not a weatherman, nor have I ever played one on TV, but for whatever it's worth, I did look at the DopplerMegaTron 5000 (or, as it is also known, weather.com) right after the announcement, and it looked pretty bad.

My guess was that it was going to be steady rain, sometimes heavy, for about 3-4 hours. If the game was to be played, the first window didn't look like it'd open till about 9pm or so. Personally, I would have been fine with that as a fan, but I wonder if the 12:30 start time tomorrow played into a decision to not purposely start a game that wouldn't end till after midnight? Is a double header easier on the teams than a crappy night of sleep?

And obviously, between my reading of the radar and game time, things started to change, and it turns out Cinci got hit with nothing worse than sprinkles. Oh well....

The power pack was a great deal. It's not like you had to buy 8 tickets to Tuesday night games against the Astros to get the Yankees tickets. You got Opening Day, Fireworks Fridays, and at least 1 Cardinals game. Also, you could have sold the Opening Day tickets for probably half of what the power pack was worth, and got the Yankees tickets that way.

There are many things to complain about the Reds, but tickets are extremely reasonable. It doesn't seem fair to attack them for ticket selling: they do everything possible to make sure as many fans as possible can get to the games. If anything, tying the Yankees tickets to other games just made sure that there would be fewer Yankess fans there.

I didn't really care about the Yankee tickets personally, that was my complaint. I would have much rather had 4 or 5 regular non-premium $15 games than 3 $30 Yankee games. I bought the power pack for the things you mentioned, I had to take the Yanks tickets to get part of the deal.

TB did you get any rain during the day in your area? I work in the Blue Ash area and it poured this afternoon. Got home in Hamilton and it never rained at all (and still hasn't).

From Twitter tonight, I noticed that the Reds twitter account posted some photos from the ballpark and it was a swamp. I'm thinking the postponement had more to do with the field conditions than actual rain tonight. If it's not safe to play, then I'm all for not playing the game so I don't have to watch Joey or Jay tear an ACL or something running the bases in poor conditions.

What gives?

1. Via twitter the team is saying that there was unsafe field conditions (2" of rain).
2. Maybe having a day game tomorrow came into play.
3. This is the Yankees only time here.
4. IMHO it's damned if you and damned if you don't. I've been to games that never should have started with frequent delays. The worst was another interleague game IIRC in 2003 vs the Jays Sunday day game with ~ 3 hour rain delay.

FWIW, I just meandered through the Game Thread for tonight, and somebody there posted a screenshot of the radar at around the same time I saw it. It's massively zoomed-out, but basically that giant blob southwest of Cinci is what I noticed. It was moving north-north-east, and figured to swamp the park for a few hours until it decided to break up and miss us.

But like I said: I'm not a weatherman. I'm just a guy who thought that the game could still be played, but only if you were willing to start it late.

Also: I had no idea about the field conditions, but that part makes a lot of sense, too.

Yeah but when you get a lot of rain in a short amount of time, how fast can that really drain and be ready for a game? That's probably what they were struggling with along with the radar that looked really ugly for a while until it decided to not hit the Cincy area.

I remember a snow day I had back when I was in high school where our school was called off because of a threat of bad snow and then we didn't get anything at all (although it was pretty cold). The weather can be so weird here sometimes. I ended up going to the movies with some friends and we cracked up over our random and unnecessary day off, LOL

Per Better Off Red's blog: Today’s game with the New York Yankees has been postponed due to the forecast of steady rain throughout the evening. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, June 22nd, at 7:10 p.m.

Regardless, I hate double headers. Seems most of the best players don't play in both games.

Considering the field was already slippery because of pregame storms Monday night as Heisey demonstrated on his 1st inning misplay, I imagine the outfield was saturated from more heavy rains. While the drainage will catch up, the ground is going to retain water.

good news for those who bought tickets to last night's game and cannot make it today (the Reds are definitely NOT the Bengals):

TICKET EXCHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT

Fans opting to exchange their June 21st Reds/Yankees ticket for a future 2011 Reds regular season game will receive a seat in the same seating category as originally purchased, as well as one voucher for a field box ticket (a $34 value) for a Sunday through Friday 2011 Reds regular season game, based on availability. The field box voucher does not need to be used at the same game as the exchange game. The only exclusion for the exchange and redemption is the Reds/Cardinals series in July.

If I understand this correctly, that sounds really good. I had two view level tickets to last night's game as part of my Power Pack. However, I also received two really good tickets that are much closer than mine from someone that cannot go to tonight's make up game and wasn't too worried about using them for a future game they could attend. As a result, I plan to use the really good seats for tonight's game and I'll still have my original view level seats for another game. If I understand the above, it sounds like I can use my view level seats for any other game, pending availability, and including the Cardinals series, in the same section, right? Additionally, I should also receive a voucher for a field box ticket that can be used for any series Sunday through Friday with the exception of the Cardinals series? If I have it right, that's an awesome deal.
