Isn't Mes already on the 40 man?

Wow. Slim pickings. If that's the list I only protect Mez and Sappelt as of today.

Mes, Sappelt, Soto, Puckett. Maybe Lotzkar if he stays healthy and effective in the second half. Also need to add Maloney to the current 40 man.

Spots freed up:

Hernandez, Renteria, Cordero, Smith, Negron, Valaika. Fisher also if necessary. Burton non-tendered if he comes back, but he may push somebody else off before the end of the year.

Mesoraco and Sappelt are absolutes.

Scott Carroll is a guy I would be surprised to see left unprotected. He has a good arm.

Neftali Soto and Josh Ravin are question marks, though I think the Reds would protect Ravin before Soto. Ravin is hitting upper 90's and there is a rumor that he hit triple digits in his last game. There is a chance someone would take him with that arm even if he doesn't reach AA. You can hide that kind of arm in the bullpen and hope it develops. When he is on top of his game, I think he compares favorably with anyone in our system (from a pitching standpoint).

Also with Soto playing 1b now on a fulltime basis he is double blocked in the system by two pretty good players.

What about Guillon?

I really don't think guys like Soto, Lotzkar, Pucket, etc. need to be protected because of the extremely low likelihood they get drafted since they are so raw...

Puck, probably not, but Soto, yes. Two scouts concurred that they see him as a young Derrek Lee. And Lotzkar at one time had the best pure stuff in the organization. They put Jordan Smith on when he missed most of the year and Lotzkar has way better stuff. He'll get added.

Why would a team keep Soto on their 25-man roster for the entire season? He's performing mediocrely at AA. Lotzkar, while he has great stuff, hasn't pitched above low A and can't stay healthy. They won't need to protect him either...

Teams will do things to keep guys if they really want a guy. Example, Donnie Veal. The Pirates kept him the entire year and he threw less than 20 innings for them.

Oh, I know they will, I just can't imagine anybody *really* wants Soto when he is so unflexible as to what he could offer off of a MLB bench...

Couldn't Soto be taken to play for a AAA affiliate?

If the Reds put him on the Double-A roster in the off-season, which they won't do.

High-upside guys close to the majors tend to have a good chance of getting drafted (unlike, for example, Danny Dorn, who's most likely at his peak). Mesoraco and Sappelt are givens; Lotzkar also definitely needs protection. Puckett, Soto, and Ravin may be worth looking at also.

Gullion would be tempting, but even with the propensity of some teams to steal prospects, I can't think of anyone who'd be willing to put a guy who hasn't even made it to A-ball on their major league roster for a full season. If we have an extra spot, I suppose he could fill it, but I'd rather have it open for a hot AAA player to have an easy path up to the majors.

One dark horse could be Travis Webb. I'm not saying they are going to, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

He played some catcher last year and 3B the year before.. He could very well play a few innings at both while also playing the majority of his time at 1B.

A year where Soto gets 50 ABs primarily pinch-hitting isn't a poor choice for a team that isn't going to contend. (Or even one that might.)

A lot of stock goes into how well players perform recently. If not for that, I doubt Kris Negron, Logan Ondrusek, Daryl Thompson (the second time), or Enerio Del Rosario would've been added to the 40-man roster when they were.

You don't think Logan deserves a 40-Man spot?

Of course not. I'm not saying any of those guys didn't deserve it. I'm simply saying that teams tend to be put a lot of stock in the most recent data.

You just gotta understand what qualifies ofva 40-man spot or not I suppose.
