Well, maybe.

The film was released in April, 1989, having been filmed in 1988.

Canseco says he and McGuire began using steroids for the first time in the late 80's. Widespread steroid use in MLB reportedly took off in the early mid 90's, and especially after the strike.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if Charlie was on the cutting edge of the latest and greatest designer drugs, but also wouldn't be surprised if he exaggerated his tale a bit, in the Hollywood tradition.

The timeline is a bit fishy, to me.

Steroids had been around for a long time before the late 80's- just read about Lyle Alzado. Alzado claimed to have started using roids in 69 per the Wikipedia entry about him. Schwarzenegger certainly had access to them in the gyms of SoCal in the 70's. Ben Johnson was busted in Seoul in 88 and it wasn't as if everybody was surprised to hear about these steroid thingys.
