He's also the most-disappointing prospect in all of the Reds' minor league system this year. Hopefully he turns it around.

In other news, Kris Negron is making a run at "Worst Player In Triple-A." He's 0-for-4 on the night and is now batting .190. Even his parents are surprised he gets so much playing time.

Don't know the particulars, but he was thrown out at home on that triple tonight.

The ball got past Wilkin Castillo, the Braves 3B, and Yonder thought he could make it home. Yonder was badly mistaken. Not even close.

Good game tonight.

Yonder and Mesoraco have been the most notable quiet bats during the recent cold stretch. Both had extra base hits tonight. Hopefully, it's a good sign. Cozart is also part of the swoon although he has been getting hits. His power numbers have dropped off the table.

Did anyone hear why Francisco was pulled from the lineup? At the time he was 2 for 2 with a HR off Minor, a tough lefty.

I was at a Mud Hens game the other day where the 6-9 hitters were all .210 and below. There's a lot of roster filler in AAA.

In other late action, 3rd round pick Tony Cingrani made his pro debut, getting the start for Billings tonight. In 2 innings he allowed 2 hits and struck out 4. Helena has taken a 3-2 lead in the 8th however. The AZL Reds jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the AZL Indians on a bases loaded walk, but have given up a run in the top of the 7th to tie the game.

Elsewhere, a Drew Poulk double brings in Devin Lohman in the bottom of the 9th, and Billings is taking Helena to extra innings. Meanwhile the AZL Reds responded to by adding a pair of their own runs, and lead 3-1 in the 7th. Brandon Dailey had an RBI single, and Julio Morillo hit a sac fly after a wild pitch moved the lead runner to 3rd.

Billings walks it off in the bottom of the 10th:

* Junior Arias strikes out swinging.
* Nick O'Shea singles on a line drive to left fielder Kenneth Allison.
* Danny Vicioso singles on a ground ball to center fielder Ruben Ozuna. Danny Vicioso to 2nd. Nick O'Shea advances to 3rd, on fielding error by center fielder Ruben Ozuna.
* Alan Williams intentionally walks Kurtis Muller.
* Sammy Diaz reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by second baseman Adrian Williams. Nick O'Shea scores. Danny Vicioso to 3rd. Kurtis Muller to 2nd.

(He's also my favorite prospect, I believe.)

Danny Serafini
07-02-2011, 01:49 AM
Brodie Greene comes into tonight 6-11 with the bases loaded. He's now 6-12. The 2B makes a nice catch on a blooper and has Gregoius way off of first. Unfortunately for Inland Empire, the throw sails wide, and Means scampers home. 4-1 Bakersfield.

Danny Serafini
07-02-2011, 01:51 AM
Stephen Hunt hits a liner off the third baseman's glove, but he recovers and just throws him out. Bakersfield up 4-1 after 7, Clayton Shunick coming in to pitch.

Small sample size admittedly, but Alejandro Chacin bears watching. He is closing for AZL Reds and has 9 K's in 3.1 IP. 8 of them are swinging. He just turned 18.

Danny Serafini
07-02-2011, 02:04 AM
LaMarre had a 2 out single but got cut down stealing. Shunick back in to close this one out.

Danny Serafini
07-02-2011, 02:12 AM
Shunick gives up a leadoff double, then two outs later gives up another double. 4-2, one out to go.

Danny Serafini
07-02-2011, 02:15 AM
Shunick gets a K, and this one belongs to the Blaze! Bakersfield snaps a 4 game losing streak and moves to 4-5 in the 2nd half. They are still 5 games out of first, as Stockton is a perfect 9-0. In fact they're riding a 17 game win streak. Not really the team you want to see in your division. Meanwhile 1st half champ San Jose is in the basement at 2-7.

Danny Serafini
07-02-2011, 02:18 AM
Top hitters for Bakerfield are Stephen Hunt (2-4, 2 2B, 2R) and Alex Buchholz (2-4, 2RBI). Tim Crabbe goes to 2-3 with a nice game (7IP, 3H, 1R, 1BB, 7K). On the other side, Inland Empire has now started the 2nd half 0-9. Ouch.

Yes, you're right. And it comes at a time when some of the teams had been reeling.

The DSL Reds won 5-2. The VSL Reds won 3-0.

Haven't looked at all the numbers system-wide, but it seems that the organization might be doing a good job of collecting/developing power arms. I'm going by the recent strikeout binge. 18 for Billings last night, following the ridiculous performance in which Daniel Renken struck out 12 in his first four innings for Dayton the other night. Dayton goes 1-2-3 (Renken-Smith-Corcino) in the Midwest League in Ks. At this early juncture, Wes Mugarian stands second in the Pioneer League. Sulbaran is fifth in the California. And as was pointed out, young Alejandro Chacin has 9 in 3.1 IP for the AZL Reds.

Agreed. A couple guys in that category who may be emerging late are Travis Webb and Tim Crabbe. Guys who were pretty much completely off prospect radars, but they've always had good arms. Takes time sometimes.

Interesting to see Crabbe mentioned. He intrigued me last year for his good GO/AO of 1.73, his very decent K numbers (76 in 82 innings), and relatively low number of homers given up (7 in 82 innings.) But his control was terrible, 55 W. What he seems to have found this year is his control and he's done it without sacrificing anything else. He's got 71 K's in 65 innings and only 24 W's. Better than a K per and a 3-1 ratio. He is coming, IMO, very much onto the radar screen.

Brandon is a very fast kid who's a tremendous athlete. He has been a lead off hitter earlier as a youngster but was moved to the 3 spot from 15 to 18. In Canada we don't use aluminum bats from 16 and up and Brandon showed the ability to still hit for some power with a wooden bat Banging them out of the park on a fairly consistent basis. Hitting home runs vs pro pitching as a 17 and 18 year old as part of our national team. That said he is best suited as a high average gap power player which his coaches in Vegas have told him that's what they want him to concentrate on. As a lead off hitter he's going to have to become more patient. He's very aggressive in the box. He is a very dedicated young man and I have no doubt that he's working his tail off to succeed.

As for Mitch he was a year older than my son so I didn't know his game as well but watched him on many occasions while he was growing up.
