Red Sox LF Ted Williams hit a game-winning three-run homer off the RF roof in the bottom of the ninth inning against Cubs RHP Claude Passeau. The NL used 22 players, and every team was represented except for the Phillies. The AL used 20 players, and all eight clubs were represented. Four Reds played in the game. 2B Lonny Frey started and was 1-for-1 with a single and was caught stealing. He was lifted in the top of the fifth inning for pinch-hitter Billy Herman of the Dodgers, who stayed in the game at 2B. RHP Paul Derringer was the first relief pitcher for the NL, replacing Dodgers starter Whit Wyatt. Derringer pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits with 1 K. RHP Bucky Walters relieved Derringer, pitching two innings and allowing one run on three hits with 2 K's and 2 BB's. Walters was also 1-for-1 at the plate with a double and a run scored. 1B Frank McCormick entered the game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement for Cardinals 1B Johnny Mize, but did not get a plate appearance. The managers for the game were "Deacon" Bill McKechnie of the Reds for the NL, and Del Baker of the Tigers for the AL.
