View Full Version : Masset as closer?

I would love to see Dusty give Masset a chance to close.....especially after Cordero's pitiful performance tonight!! Tonight's loss hurts real bad! This team is spiraling out of control fast. It feels like the Reds brass thinks they will miraculously start playing better but that will not happen until players start to understand that there is competition for their spot. I would promote Masset to closer and give him a 2-3 week audition to see what he can do. As long as Masset can do the job, the Reds should consider trading Cordero to a team that will take him. I know everyone is going to say tha Cordero has actually pitched well but his performance tonight sums up his last couple of years with the Reds....no consistency. You never know if he is going to be on his game and sit the competition down 1, 2, 3 or just melt down like tonight! Can't have this inconsistency in a closer.

Chapman's been even more inconsistent. He's been good lately but I would have to see him maintain this over a couple of months.

I say it happens if Reds are 6 or 7 out they become sellers. Being 6 out in a division where barely above .500 wins division is a mountain to climb. In a couple of weeks I predict Masset will be the closer.

Masset has 3 BS & Coco has 4 BS

As long as the roster stays this way, Cordero should be the closer. Just my opinion, but Chapman is not ready. If Cordero was not available, my closer choices: Masset, Ondrusek, Bray, LeCure, Chapman. There is no rule that the closer has to be a strikeout guy that throws 100.

Exactly, I'm as frustrated as anyone but Cordero is having a great year, no way you remove him from the closer role.

Other than Juiced Eric Gagne, every closer goes through rough patches. Even Mariano. Relievers in general are inconsistent from year to year.

At least two of those were in the first week in the season. I'm not saying remove Cordero, but Masset has been great lately.

With all the potential closers in house, I would take a serious look at selling high on Coco. His contract is up at the end of the year and I don't think the Reds want any part of re-signing him.... not at his current pay. If he (plus others) to a real contender will net you something useful, go for it.

I would love it if we traded Cordero, and doing so would not necessarily be a referendum on our intentions to compete this season. It would just be a sound move. Problem is, if we move him, there is no one left in our bullpen with the designated "closer" tag. Imagine the difficulties this presents to a qualified Bakermetrics practitioner.

Bot 9, you're up 4-2. Time to go get the closer, dude. Closers close. Wait, what? We traded our closer? Um.....Bryan, what the hell can we do here? Can't close out a game without a closer, dude....yeah...I agree, Bryan. Ok, c'mere, Paul. Take this note to the umpire, dude. (Written on the note in large manuscript is "WE FOURFET, DUDE. NO CLOSER.")

That's why it simply can't happen.

If we continue to slide, and we get to a point where there is no chance we make a run I do think we trade Coco. I am certain he would bring a decent return. Say what you want, but guys like Cordero are tough to find. I do think Masset/Ondrusek could close. If we are in contention, no way do I trade Cordero. Any ideas what we could get for Coco?

I wouldn't mind trading Cordero whether we are in contention or not, it would just differ on what we wanted back most likely. A LF or SS if we are still close, someone who can help us next year (3B?) if we are out of it. By that same token, if we are still contention I'm not against keeping him either.

Co Co is having an All Star season with two bad games this week.

Massett? Really

If anyone should be the closer over Co Co, its Bray.

How does a left-handed specialist with less innings than appearances fit the bill of a closer?

Agree. It's a shame the Reds continue to "carry" him on the MLB roster when it's pretty clear Dusty has no faith in him in tight situations.... and I don't blame him. The team has been basicly, short one pitcher since Chapman returned from his "DL" stint.
BTW, if the Reds continue to wallow in 4th place much longer, they're not gonna need a closer..... not many save opportunities..... especially for 12+ million that Cordero makes.

Cordero is still having a good year even though he's blown a couple of recent saves. I'm way more comfortable with him in the 9th than anyone else that we have.

He won't make excuses or anything but I honestly think he's a victim of how bad we've been playing. We haven't exactly had a lot of late leads lately to hand over to him so he hasn't been getting work in on a regular basis. I think everyone knows how bad that is for a reliever. Get him more leads and he'll be fine.

The only thing is....Dusty won't let Bray pitch to right handed batters. Would love to see him go, like tonight, against more than just a lefty. Also, imo, he struck out Fielder twice last night, before he ending up getting a hit, and then Bray got yanked. Understand it because of manager, but illogical, imo.
Masset has been being groomed for this for 3 years.....give'm his due....his is far more dominate than COCO-ONO.

Chapman is only up here because ownership thinks he sells tickets. He's a novelty.

Wrong reason to have him up here. He should be in triple A becoming a starting pitcher.

Anyone agree that NOW Masset should be the closer after Cordero blew it again? This is hard to watch, very hard to watch!!!

There is zero doubt in my mind that Masset should have been out there to pitch the 9th today.

Cordero has been awful all week. Masset was fresh.

Dusty is in la-la land sometimes.

Our team played great this week, against the division leader!! It is inexcusable to have our closer not be able to throw strikes, walking batters, even walking poor hitters, almost take Week's head off. I realize Coco, has had a good season, until now. Dusty, when your closer is struggling, it really is OK to let someone else close the game, until he gets his 'stuff' together!! I blame Dusty for letting his players work their butt off, and just throw the game away, when he can see the pitcher doesn't have it!!!!!!!!!!!

He sucks!
If your going to win a Pennant you have to win close ball games. That is the difference between a losing team and a division winner.
WE have lost 21 1 run games,if we win half of those we have a 5 game lead right now!!
Gomes is a joke, About time we got a SS who can hit a little.

Agreed... a week and a half ago people were mentioning CoCo as an allstar if he only had more opportunities. Bad stretch the last couple weeks indeed, but he has been reliable this year with the exception of the last 3.

If they had him as an All Star they are blind,i hold my breath every time he toes the rubber.

Codero has had a good season, but the Brewers over the years seem to get him. Especially after last night it probably would have been good to let Masset have it.

This is a joke, right? How is blowing 5-6 saves, outta 22 chances a good season? He is not a dominate pitcher, anymore, (imo, hasn't been in 2-3 years)and it is time to let Masset get his due.

You kind of answered your own question. He was having a good year but is having a horrible week.

Masset has also had 'bad' weeks this year. How about his part in our huge blown lead to the Dodgers and the games around that time span, or his inability to get anyone out for a span of about 3-5 weeks at the start of the year? If you're going to make a change as significant as changing your closer you better have a little better memory than that.

To me, the only real solution would be to do it by committee and see if Cordero can earn some trust back. Or if Chapman is going to be throwing strikes, give him a shot. Not Nick Masset though.

His performance today as well as this series certainly would suggest that it is time to weigh all options. With them money that this guy is owed, there is no way that he is going to be taken out of the closer role. I would rather them bite the bullet and trade him for prospects. He is not going to be successful in any position out of the bullpen. His ego is too big. The guy makes me sick to my stomach every time he comes into a game. By the moaning and groaning in the stands, I'd say most other people feel the same way. In regards to today, you take a guy in the 7th and 8th innings (Chapman) who absolutely blows through hitters registering 98-102 on the gun. Then you bring in a guy struggling to hit 93 with nothing else? How do you expect to be successful in the situation? I believe Cordero would have gotten the night off if they had a game tomorrow and only saw action because of the break. A lot of second guessing going on in that clubhouse tonight.

I would hope so,and the front office,
This d
ivision is still weak and we could win it,Votto needs to learn how to throw the ball to the base at first .and we need a closer!
