Prior to the game there was a moment of silence for former Tigers great Harry Heilmann, who had died the previous day. Cardinals LF Stan Musial and Braves 3B Bob Elliott homered in the fourth inning off Yankees LHP Eddie Lopat to break a 1-1 tie and give the NL a 4-1 lead. The NL used 20 players, with every club represented except for the Cubs. The AL used 21 players, with every club represented except for the Senators. Two Reds played in the game. OF Johnny Wyrostek was 0-for-1 after replacing Pirates LF Ralph Kiner in the eighth inning, entering the game in RF and moving Stan Musial (who had started the game in LF and moved to RF when Kiner entered) back to LF. RHP Ewell Blackwell was the fourth pitcher for the NL, allowing one hit with 2 K's and 1 BB in pitching a scoreless ninth and earning the save. The managers for the game were Eddie Sawyer of the Phillies for the NL, and Casey Stengel of the Yankees for the AL.

LF Frank Robinson started and went 0-for-2 before being lifted for pinch-hitter Duke Snider of the Dodgers in the fifth inning. CF Gus Bell started and was 0-for-1 before being lifted for pinch-hitter Willie Mays of the Giants in the fourth inning. C Ed Bailey started and was 0-for-3 with a walk before being replaced by Dodgers C Roy Campanella in the seventh inning. SS Roy McMillan started and played the entire game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. 1B Ted Kluszewski entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Pirates 1B Dale Long in the sixth inning and remained in the game at 1B. Klu went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. RHP Brooks Lawrence and LHP Joe Nuxhall were also on the team, but did not play.
