I noticed that Bakersfield has some pretty high K/9 rates on their staff:

Sulberan - 10.6
Bowman - 10.4
Shunick - 9.9
Crabbe - 9.8
Ravin - 9.5
Salinas - 9.4
Janke - 9.1
Thurman - 8.2

That's higher than most Reds affiliates have. It's one bright spot, I guess.

Is this a league wide approach? Defense is so dicey the pitcher has to do it all? I know the field is the worst down there.

Of course, they are all walking 3.8+ batters per 9. It's like a bunch of mini Volquez's. A few of those guys are a little old for the league as well. Perhaps a timely promotion will move their careers forward. If the hostile run environment out there in California is really as bad as they say, I'd hate to see some of these guys get beat up too much.

Anyone with some insight on this team/league/staff?

I'm not necessarily saying it's a factor in this case, but when you're in a league with small foul-ball territories, it'll spike the K and BB totals.
