Pirates: Morton takes hill
Charlie Morton will have the opportunity to earn his first win since June 15 when he goes to work Monday for the Pirates in the series opener.

The right-hander (7-5, 3.80 ERA) endured a difficult month of June that prompted Hurdle to skip one of Morton's starts at the end of the month. The hurler went through a stretch from May 7-June 4 in which he did not allow more than two earned runs in an outing, but has since allowed three or more in four of his past five appearances.

Morton has also struggled at home this year, going 2-4 with a 4.70 ERA in eight starts, compared to 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in eight starts on the road.

Scott Rolen is getting a second consecutive day of rest (shoulder/general soreness). Manager Dusty Baker said Rolen also did not get much rest over the All-Star break, since Rolen played in the game. Thus, another day off.

Rolen will return to the lineup Tuesday, Baker said.

Also, Chris Heisey would have started in left tonight but the Pirates flipped pitchers, with Morton going instead of McDonald. Baker thus went with Lewis in left and said Heisey will start Tuesday.

Just like yesterday was a critical start for Homer, this is a pretty big start for Willis. If he pitches very well, the Reds will be less likely to chase another starter, and will have a valuable commodity down the road.

I'm a little confused as to why Willis is starting ahead of Leake. As long as Leake and Arroyo don't start back-to-back, we're ok. I think they may be trying to limit Leake's innings even after he attributed last year's erratic schedule to his troubles at the end of the season. I hope it doesn't effect him too much.

Once again, since we've got George Grande at the mic, everyone can join in the rain-delayed fun and participate in:

Caveat Emperor's Official George Grande Drinking Game™

RULES:
This is a group drinking game (Reds baseball is a social affair). If you find yourself playing alone, utilize the drink numbers in as your personal drinking responsibilities.

Before the game, everyone must assign themselves a number 1-9. If playing with disposable cups, write your number on your cup.

[B]RULE 1 "Hello": Before the game, everyone starts with a full drink. When George Grande greets you with a "Hi, Hello, and Welcome", give everyone in the group a cheers and take 3 drinks. [3]

RULE 2 "Story Time": Whenever George Grande says "You know his story," everyone must shout out one fact about the player on screen. Anyone who cannot shout out a fact or repeats someone else's fact must take a drink. If someone shouts out an incorrect fact (verified as incorrect by baseball-reference.com or wikipedia.com), he or she must finish their drink. [1]

RULE 3 "Smiling": If George Grande goes to commercial saying the Reds are "On the smiling side of the scoreboard" everyone must start smiling. The last person to smile must take 1 drink for every run the Reds are ahead by. [1]

RULE 4 "Gonna Bee": On any deep fly ball, if George Grande begins to say "It's gonna be...." everyone must start drinking and continue to drink until George finishes his call with "Gone!" If anyone actually finishes their drink during this time, they must shout out "Gone!" as soon as their drink is empty. This person can then give drinks out to the group in the same amount as the HR that was just hit (solo HR = 1 drink, 2 run = 2 drinks, etc.). [2]

RULE 5 "Got It": If any player makes a catch in the outfield and causes George Grande to exclaim "He Got It! He Got It!" everyone must high five someone and have 1 drink for every time George repeated the phrase "Got It." [2 or more]

If "He Got It! He Got It" comes after a "It's Gonna Be......" as a result of a catch at the wall, everyone must finish their drink. [finish]

RULE 6 "Double Play: On a double play ball, if George Grande calls it by the numbers (ex. "6-4-3") every person with that number -- which should have been assigned at the start of the game -- must take 2 drinks. If Grande adds a "Yes, siree!" at the end of his call, everyone BUT the numbers listed must take 2 drinks. [2]

RULE 7 "Birds on the Bats": If George Grande starts talking about the Cardinals, for whatever reason, during a game not involving St. Louis, everyone must take 1 drink. If Grande refers to them as the "Redbirds" instead of their official nickname, take an additional drink. [1-2]

If George specifically mentions Albert Pujols (#5), player 5 gets to assign 5 drinks to the rest of the group. If Grande refers to him as "Sir Albert" or "Prince Albert," player 5 gets to assign 5 drinks but must also take 5 drinks himself. If your group has less than 5 players, everyone must yell "Hail Albert!" and take 5 drinks. [5]

RULE 8 "That's Not My Name": During the broadcast, if Grande refers to player by a nickname everyone must shout out another famous Reds nickname. The last person to shout out a nickname must take 2 drinks. If Grande makes a reference to Juan Castro as "Manos del Oros" everyone must shout "Fiesta!" and take 2 drinks. [2]

RULE 9 "Get 'em on": If, when talking about moving runners or playing small-ball, Grande states "Get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in," everyone must take 1 drink (since we're playing for 1 run). If Grande states this as a result of a run actually scoring, everyone must drink 1 for every run the Reds are currently ahead. If the scoring play results in the Reds still losing, everyone must yell at Grande for being an idiot and take 1 drink for every run the Reds are currently behind, plus 2 penalty drinks. [1 or 2]

RULE 10 "The Creeper": During the telecast, any time George Grande makes a reference to Chris Welsh by any of his nicknames (The Crafty Lefthander, the Creeper, etc.), Player 1 (Welsh was a pitcher, after all) must assign 3 drinks to the group. [3]

If Grande discusses Welsh's facial hair (or lack thereof), anyone in the group without a beard, goatee or mustache must take 2 drinks. [2]

If Grande brings up Welsh's only career home run, Player 1 must take 4 drinks. If they actually show footage of Welsh's home run, Player 1 must give out 4 drinks and finish his own drink. [finish / 4]

RULE 11 "Boot-Scootin' Boogie": If Grande describes anyone as "Boot scootin" down the line, the first person to drink gets to assign 4 drinks to the group for being the fastest. If Grande states someone has "scampered" home, the owner of the house where the game is being watched gets to assign 4 drinks to the group. If you are watching the game at a bar, everyone must take 4 drinks and the last person to finish must order another round. [4]

RULE 12 "This One Belongs To The Reds": If the Reds win the game, everyone must cheers and thank George for a job well done. Take 2 drinks for making it to the end. If the Reds lose the game, everyone must give the TV the middle finger and finish their drinks to cover the sorrow.

Cozart pulls a grounder into the left field hole. 7 games played with a hit in every one. Stubbs takes third.
Votto grounds back to the pitcher and Cozie takes second. 1 out.

Thats assuming Leake is a full go from this point forth. I think Leake will hit his limit barring injury then shut it down. Don't see the issue with the order here.

What I'm getting at is with Leake, it is a moot point. Unless I'm totally mistaken he isn't going to throw every 5th day from this point out. Maybe 170-180 innings max? (Between MLB and LOU)

I don't see it happening. He's at 102 innings right now (combined Cincy and Louisville). If he pitches every fifth game from tomorrow on, he'll get 14 more starts. If he continues to average about six-and-a-third per start, he'll end up around 190 innings.

That means the Verducci Rule flares will go up sometime in mid-September. Let's be honest here. If the Reds are in the race and Leake is still effective at that point in time, no way are they taking the ball out of his hand for his last three turns based on an arbitrary guideline.

We must have been raking at the beginning of the season. I know that the Reds have been at the top since the beginning of the season, so presumably have been dropping a bit lately.

I think the conclusion to be drawn is the current struggles are more of a reflection of a random thing rather than a long term problem. They clearly aren't a group that is void of the ability to hit in those types of situations, otherwise it would be a season long problem.

I would expect a reasonable bounceback to start in the near future.

Here's the issue:

With runners on, Cincy is 4th in the majors in OPS and 1st in the NL. Their current OPS would have ranked in the bottom half of baseball over the last few years in those same situations. Same is true for RISP.

Everyone needs to recalibrate their offensive expectations due to the drought in MLB this season.

Now, for the bad news:

If you are to buy into this method of looking at what they are getting, you also have to believe that Cincy is league average offensively at 3B and slightly under in LF.

That's a silly arguement.

Based on your theory, the BRM wasn't a hitting machine.

As many teams have surpassed their numbers over the years.

If the Reds are better "clucth" hitters than other teams this year, that's better than having a career best team number but being in the bottom of the league becuase other teams are doing better,

Only one of those runs should have been earned that inning. Some of baseball's rules make no sense. (Like not allowing a runner from first to score on a ground-rule double when it's obvious he's going to score. Way to penalize good offense.)

He's obviously had his best games against us this season, but he's been pretty darned good overall...as has most of the Pirates staff.

Willis clearly didn't want to come out.

That too.

Dontrelle may be listed as throwing 69 pitches, but I promise you that he threw a TON more during all the rain delay warmups. I don't blame Dusty at ALL for pulling him here.

I don't disagree but with two outs and a man on first it didn't seem like a bad time to be the "players coach" that he is and give Willis a chance to get out of the 5th.

Either way I think Dontrell did a decent job tonight.

What up with Hurdle?
He lets his pitcher hit, run the bases, and then pulls him before he throws another pitch. THAT makes no sense.

Lewis has yet to hit a ball 61' yet. Although 1 was a sac bunt.

IMO the Reds pitching is looking good. Note to Reds hitters: To win, you must score. :dunno:

You know I don't care how bad Yonder Alonso is in LF. I'd bring him up just so as not to have to watch Fred Lewis any more.

Trying to even up the managing ability. Maybe Charlie got hurt running the bases, and Watson was up already, so no big delay? Or he knew he was already using a play for d'Arnaud, so he didn't want to burn a 2 out, bases empty, up by 2, bench player.

Over a month since the Reds had a two game winning streak. Tough to do.

Even for really bad teams, I would think this is incredibly rare.

Sam LeCure in to pitch. Okay, NOW we can win... ;)

Oh, and Dusty double-switched Heisey into left for Lewis. :D

Don't worry....the eruptions of all eruptions is about to occur. Mount Saint Helens will be a mere burp compared to when the Reds bust out.

George's cheery disposition while the Reds have 3 lousy hits through 6 innings is just a weeeeee bit annoying.

If he's in the org as of Aug 1, and not up here, then I'll be mad. I don't mind protecting his trade value right now.

I actually think Fred Lewis could be a serviceable LF in a platoon situation and with a team having a different make up than the Reds. We need him to either be an OBP guy with speed on the bases or someone with some pop in his bat. Unfortunately, he's neither.

I think you're being charitable, and that of course is good. I think it's time to cut ties with Fred Lewis. If they're not going to bring Alonso, I think I'd rather suffer every day with Chris Heisey. At least there's some possible future in it.

The offense hasn't scored multiple runs in an inning since Brandon Phillips walk off home run on Friday.
