As little value as Betemit has, I'm almost surprised the Royals weren't able to get more out of the deal.

Betemit has a 110 OPS plus, is a switch hitter who can play 3B and SS. He hits Righties a lot better than lefties (just what we need) and given the positions he plays he would have allowed us to throw Renteria on the scrap heep while givng us a natural alternative to Rolen/Cairo. It would have been a good move for the Reds at those prices and was a real good move for Detroit.

Cruz might have a fringey future and Rodriguez looks more like organizational filler. Something like Mitchell Clarke and Mark Fleury would be roughly equal to (more likely better than) that package. I'd have done that, but who knows how teams feel about guys.

I think he basically IS Miguel Cairo, since he's having an unexpectedly good season at the dish and his ability to play shortstop these days is largely break-glass-in-case-of-emergency.

Well, if he is a Miguel Cairo then decent pick up. Cairo has done more then anyone would ever expect for the Reds. Plays everywhere and seems to catch fire when needed. He's scrapy

What does that mean to win "back to back games"? That is not a concept I'm familiar with anymore.

Betemit is a guy I'd love to see the Reds sign as a role/bench player next year. He and Cairo would compliment each other. Or DFA Cairo and keep Frazier, since Frazier could probably back up at short. Again, why did we sign Cairo to a 2-year deal.

i would think most on here would agree that was a good signing. i don't think cairo had done a thing to hurt the team.

I'm actually not fond of the idea of signing Betemit for next year. He might be a small upgrade over Miguel Cairo, but having both players on the roster is redundant imho. I think the bench next year should be Mesoraco (if not starting), Cairo, Paul Janish, Fred Lewis, and Dave Sappelt (with Heisey starting in left). If they're going to non-tender Fred Lewis, call up Todd Frazier or Yonder Alonso.
