Nice. This guy is 26. I hope he spends the rest of the year there. Need to decide on him.

Carolina is going to have to see a bigger contribution from the pitching staff. The Mudcats have climbed all the way up to the third spot in league hitting at .264. Thank you Mr. Phipps! Phipps was the third best average in the league after yesterday at .328. Tennesse and Mobile are tied for the top spot at .274.

On the flip side, Carolina remains dead last in team pitching at a 5.05 ERA. Mississippi is ninth at 4.28. As I posted elsewhere, if the pitching doesn't step up this team can't win the second half. Losing a 5-2 lead last night, and eventually the game, isn't the way to get it done. Webb's return should help but I would like to see one more upgrade on this staff if at all possible..

End of one inning in Tennessee, tied at 1-1. Soto drove in Rodriguez for the Mudcats run.
James Avery starting for Carolina.

Doesn't look like Phipps is starting for Louisville tonight.

Felix Perez extends his hit streak to 13 games in the top of the 2nd with a single.

muddie
07-23-2011, 06:57 PM
End of second, 1-1. Perez was thrown out at third to end the top of the second trying advance on a bobble by the Smokies catcher. This sets up Avery as the lead off batter to begin the third. Not good.

At the end of four full innings the score remains 1-1. The game is on MiLB.TV so I get to watch Myron Noodleman tonight between innings. What else could you ask for!

Enjoying the Dragons game in the left field porch section. First Dragons game of the season so it's my first time to see Hamilton's speed and Torres bat. So far so good. :)

3-0 Dragons after 1

In spite of three wild pitches by Avery, the game is tied at the end of five full, 1-1.

Tennessee changes pitchers after five. Trey McNutt leaves for a household name, Oswaldo Martinez.

Vitters with a leadoff double to begin the bottom of the 6th.

Avery walks the second batter. It is very hot and humid there so James Adkins begins to get loose. Avery has only given up three hits tonight.

3-1 Tennessse lead after Ridling doubles.

I have to wonder about Bells' willingness to run this guy out for this inning in the brutal heat. Avery clealry didn't have anything in this inning. Pitching change.

4-1 Tennessee in the bottom of the 6th with one out.

5-1 Tennessee with two out in the inning. Four runs in this inning for the Smokies.

End of six full, Smokies up 5-1...tough inning to say the least.

muddie

Middle of seven...Tennessee up 5-2. Mudcats had bases loaded and none out and only got one. Quentin Berry got picked off first when the catcher threw behind him. Perez getting thrown out at third for the third out earlier and this are inexcusable baserunning mistakes that have cost Carolina tonight.

Travis Webb in relief of Adkins in the bottom of the 7th to face Vitters. Webb's first appearance since July 7th. One out.

Scott Carroll takes the loss for the Bats. Charlotte takes that one 7-4. Phipps didn't play.

Middle of 8th, Tennesse still leads, 5-2. Donnie Joseph on for the bottom of the 8th.

Muddie, just to let you know, the only things we care about now Mudcat-related are Yasmani Grandal and Neftali Soto. Proceed accordingly.

(Kidding. Thanks for your updates as always.)

Out of eight plate appearances they have combined for three hits. Soto has two strike outs though.

Going to the ninth inning Carolina has left 17 runners on base tonight. David Cook has stranded six himself.

Hey, I'm sure not going to argue that point. This team looked lethargic offensively. I hope this isn't a preview of things to come.

Walk off sac bunt O_o

That's actually my second favorite part of Dayton's game tonight, with #1 being..

*Billy Hamilton singles on a ground ball to pitcher Drew Tyson.
*With Ronald Torreyes batting, throwing error by Drew Tyson on the pickoff attempt, Billy Hamilton to 2nd.
*With Ronald Torreyes batting, Billy Hamilton advances to 3rd on a balk.
*With Ronald Torreyes batting, wild pitch by Drew Tyson, Billy Hamilton scores.

Single to pitcher, score while the next batter is still in the box.

Sammy Diaz hit a grand slam and Billings is now up 17-6 in the ninth. If Orem scores a touchdown, they'll have to go for two.

Well, Tim Crabbe pitched 6.1 no-hit innings for Bakersfield. But he walked the bases loaded in the seventh, was relieved, and charged with two runs as Jamie Walczak walked two more. So it's 4-2 after seven.
