An official of one other club believes "the team [the Rockies] really want to do this deal with is Cincinnati, because they've got the young starting pitching to give back. So I think that's where this is going."

I agree with the shouldnt part, matter of fact, if they call back, I would drop our offer for playing games.

Ubaldo traded to the Indians for Drew Pomeranz, Alex White and others.

Ubaldo may well go on to a hall of fame career but I'll side with Walt on this one at this time. Cleveland gave up a lot, I'll speculate the equivalant of the Reds trading Mesoraco, Leake and Francisco at least.

Post has learned that #Yankees asked #Rockies 4 datys ago to do physical on Jimenez if deal agreed to, Col refused, so Yanks bowed out

#Sketchy. This, the decreased velo, and the Rockies actively shopping the guy really makes one wonder about his health.

Hold the phone on the Ubaldo deal. Apparently, he is starting for the Rockies tonight after all. Perhaps the Tribe demanded a physical as well and Colorado balked.

Ubaldo pulled from game in first inning, hugging teammates in the dugout, according to Thom Brenneman, during game tonight. Sounds gone to me.

Not joking. Sources indicate Ubaldo deal is not done "complications". RT @KrisM615: @Kevin_Goldstein I can't tell if you're joking or not.

This story is getting weirder and weirder.

Granted I haven't been watching 100%, but I thought they were talking about Fucal.

So we had our chance at a no. 1 for what? Likely Billy Hamilton, Alonso and Boxberger according to @jamieblog. Man, you do that trade! Say we roll off and win the division or wildcard. Let's go up against PHL with our nearest thing to a No. 1 Johnny Cueto, and pray for rain. We had a chance to get a true lights out No. 1 starter for 3 minor leaguers. All of which have questions or are blocked and riding pine.

Walt, you blew it.

I am glad the Reds did not throw away some prospects to get Jimenez. I don't believe he is a true ace and with the way he has been pitching the past calendar year, he might not even be a reliable #2 going forward.

The fact that the Rockies wanted to deal him, and they wouldn't show medical reports scares the heck out of me. It seems like they know something that nobody else knows about him.

I doubt anything is wrong, he's pitching every 5th day. Strikeout/walk ratio better than last year. Walks same, hits/9 up about 2 from last year. ERA and wins only thing hurting due to opponents OPS against going up .724, vs. .610. Only Leake and Cueto are better than .724 on our staff.

His velocity has reportedly been down in his past few starts. There is something that seems off with him.

True he is down from 96-98 to 92-95. Last year to this year. 92-95 still puts him as the ninth fastest SP on average in MLB.

Yeah, his past few starts he hasn't averaged over 95. While 95 is awesome, it is a step down from what he was at last year.

Well if he can't throw 97 mph anymore, we don't want him. And get rid of Leake, Wood, Bailey, Arroyo, and Willis while your at it.

When Jimenez still has an ERA in the 4's in the next couple of years, then we'll see why it's better we didn't make this deal.

That isn't the point. The point is that he hasn't been himself, and has struggled because of it. Jimenez, with the way he has been pitching, would be our #3 or 4 starter right now. Would you want to part with 2-3 top prospects for that?

Jimenez has given up 3 or less runs in 12 of his last 15 starts. What do you want from the guy? Gee, maybe he just knows how to pitch and doesn't have to rely on a 98 mph fastball to get it done.

Chapman doesn't throw 105 mph anymore. Maybe we should trade him too? And when he was throwing 105 mph, he couldn't get it over the plate, had control issues. Alot of good that was doing us.

There's nothing wrong with Jimenez.

Having said that, I would not have included Mesoraco or Hamilton in that deal. So they were asking too much of the Reds.

Jimenez has a 4.46 ERA on the year with a 1.37 WHIP, and has a 4.78 ERA this month. He has only put together one good month this year, which was June. I am sure he will return to being a solid #2 type starter, but he isn't a #1, IMO.

Vottomatic
07-31-2011, 11:11 AM
Uh, no. Jimenez last 2 starts have been questionable, albeit while trade rumors were swirling around in his head. Same with Shields. His name comes up in serious trade rumors and he goes out and throws his worst game of the year and gets rocked bad.

In July, Jimenez gave up 3, 1, 2, 2 earned runs in his first 4 starts of the month. In June, Jimenez gave up 0, 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, earned runs in his 6 starts. In May, he started coming around and his last 3 starts went like this.........3, 2, 6 earned runs.

Again, he's given up 3 or less runs in 12 of his last 15 starts. Yeah, he sucks.

Also, they say his sinker doesn't work in Colorado. He pitches a ton better outside of Coors Field.

I didn't want to give that much up if they wanted Mesoraco. But I still think it was a missed opportunity considering Jimenez is under contract 2 more years.

Wow, I just decided to look up his splits. Those home/road splits are crazy.

Maybe I am putting him down a bit too much, but there is just something about him that seems 'off' to me. I really can't put my finger on it, but I just don't have confidence in him.

I'll be very interested to see how he pitches in Cleveland.

I worry about the velocity drop of UJ. This is either a very good move by the Tribe, or a very good move by the Rox.

Vottomatic
08-27-2011, 12:48 PM
Well, in 5 games for the Tribe, Ubaldo is getting hit at a .303 clip by opposing batters, and has posted a 1.64 WHIP and a 5.79 e.r.a. He has struck out 32 in 28 IP, but has allowed 37 base hits. He's given up 5 HR's in 28 IP, after only giving up 10 HR's in 123 IP for the Rockies.

Change of leagues bothering him? Change of scenery overall? Or is he just on the decline?

We shall see over time.
