AZL Reds fall 2-1. But Brennan May (2-4, .323) continues to surprise. (On the other hand, he struck out more times today--twice--than Torreyes did in all of June.)

No Rosa today... I'm getting worried...

After giving up a leadoff home run, Klinker escapes the first with one run scored.

Josh Smith not having his best night. Dayton trails 4-0 after four (only two earned).

Torreyes is 2-2, and now at .415.

It appears that Klinker's ship has sailed. Mudcats now trail 5-1 after three.

One of my favorite teenaged pitchers in the system last year was Luis Gonzalez, who posted a 2.49 ERA and a WHIP under 1.00 for the VSL Reds at the age of 17. This year, he hasn't maintained the pace. Today, however, he went 8.1 and gave up just one run in a 2-1 victory. Strangely (although sometimes these box scores are not the last word), he neither walked nor struck out anybody.

Dayton lost 5-4. Duran had two doubles. Torreyes finishes the night at .412.

Carolina's in the bottom of the ninth. It was 5-2 when they came to bat. The first three reached and a wild pitch made it 5-3. Rodriguez bats.

Louisville lost 2-0 in 10. Jordan Smith gave it up.

Volquez: 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K. Boxberger also threw two scoreless.

Hmm. Billings scored three in the top of the first and trails 7-3 after three. Drew Poulk has a 2B and HR. McMyne: not a good evening.

Campbell singles in Skelton but Gregorius is thrown out at home. Two outs, 5-4, Campbell on second, Soto batting.

. . . Soto strikes out. 5-4 final.

Billings keeps hacking away. Now down 8-7 after seven. Poulk needs a triple for the cycle.

Bakersfield is up 5-1 in the sixth, and Brodie Greene has emerged as the man on that team. He has a grand slam and all five RBIs. Stephen Hunt is 2-3 with a 3B. Sulbaran's pitching.

Billings is up 10-8 golng into the ninth. Catcher Cristobal Rodriguez has contributed a HR. Ryan Wright has an odd line: no hits, three runs.

Sulbaran has been pitching well of late. I have to think a 4.17 era is better than average in the California League.

Sulbaran has been pitching well of late. I have to think a 4.17 era is better than average in the California League.

On top of that, he has upped his K Rate to a career high 10.2 K/9 and has a career low walk rate of 3.7. After last year, I lost interest in him. I am suddenly re-gaining interest in him as a prospect. Still has a long way to go to get to the bigs, but he has potential.

Catcher? He's never caught before.

My bad. SS. I saw the C by his name and behaved foolishly.

What's the book on Greene's glove? He certainly looks like he slugs enough for a shortstop (2011 slugging up to .440), but can he pick it? I seem to remember people saying that he would project as a second baseman in the bigs. Is that correct?

According to a radio interview with Rick Sweet, Felix Perez will join the Bats soon. Wish it was Soto.

I saw him play one game at SS last year and he dazzled me with a play he made in the hole. But that's all I got.
