Indians Designate Austin Kearns For Assignment


The Indians announced that they have designated outfielder Austin Kearns for assignment to create active roster space for Shin-Soo Choo, who has been activated from the disabled list. Choo had been on the DL since June 25th after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured thumb.

Kearns signed a one-year, $1.3MM deal with the Indians last offseason and produced a .200/.302/.287 line with two homers in 174 plate appearances. He played both corner outfield positions for the Tribe, but saw his slash line drop significantly; he posted a .263/.351/.395 line for the Indians and Yankees in 2010.

he can be had for a prorated league minimum, I would do it just to see if they can fix his swing, he still has a canon of an arm. At this point what does it hurt

The problem with bringing him now is that you have to make room on the 40-man. Maybe that's not a big problem. Now a Spring Training invite would not be a bad idea.

He got his big contract with the Nats and "called it in" for the next 3 seasons. He never looked in shape, and he would not put in the work it took to stay in the big leagues. His best friend Adam Dunn says Hi! 2 peas in a pod! If you can't keep the Nat's or Indians happy, your Dunn!! haha!

There was a time when Kearns looked like he was going to be a solid 4 or 5 guy in the lineup. I'd watch games and he always seemed to battle at the plate and give quality at-bats. One season he was very Mr. Clutch. I had high hopes for him too.

.......and then I heard a story on WLW one day that ownership/management called Dunn into the office to discuss his work habits and suggested he get away from Kearns and his lack of work ethic. Next thing you know, Kearns is traded for that very reason. He had no work ethic and they felt he was rubbing off on Dunn, who has none either. Two wannabe superstars with tons of natural talent that never worked on a darn thing to improve themselves. The word is WASTE.

After reading the Grantland article, I relate Adam Dunn's situation regarding his physical condition with Prince Fielder. I think anyone who might try to sign him this offseason may be in for a similar situation because of his physical condition. He is definitely overweight, and speaking from my own experience, his weight will age him early. If he doesn't address the issue now he may very well end up like Dunn, where his skills erode rapidly.

One or 2 of the REDS current outfield are likely to follow a similar path, hope not, but I would not be surprised.

Amazing to see the decline of both these guys. I still hold out a little hope for Dunn to come out of it, but Kearns just looked lost during his time with the Indians.
