He's a solid kid... not a superstar... but he is putting the bat on the ball.

His approach is sometimes questionable. It seems to me that he either swings at the first pitch or takes till he gets two strikes. But he does put the bat on the ball for the most part and has hit into some tough luck.

Too small a sample size. Alonso didn't do much in his short stint last year either.

My take is that Sappelt is overly aggressive. I think he needs to be more selective. But I agree he has hit into some tough luck and typically puts the bat on the ball, although he struck out twice last night.

Not overly impressed. I've watched the majority of games since he was called up, and he seems to have zero patience.

Speaking in pure hyperbole, I feel like if he's had 30 PAs so far, he probably hasn't seen a total of 35 pitches.

He is not the answer for next year's left field. Maybe off the bench once a week but I don't want to see him with a majority of the starts.

Blame it on nerves. He's new, and has better plate patience than a guy like Francisco will ever have.

Way to soon.

Look at All Star players first cup of coffee in the majors. Most have 100 at bat sample sizes at the end of years like this and many of them don't do well at all.

This is an investment in next year.

Michael Jack Schmidt hit under .200 in 1974 and Philly fans were booing him. How that turn out?

Not comparing Sappelt to Mike Schmidt, but I am comparing him to Hal McCrae.

He's going to be fine. (If Dutsy doesn't decide after 100 at bats that he sucks)

Wow...it has come down to this, we give a guy a week or so and want to make a call on him? This is baseball, not basketball. Also lets remember whom his manager is also...

Let's give him the rest of the season before you come to a conclusion. Give the Reds a chance to see what they can do with him. There aren't too many options available to the Reds, at this point, unless Hermida is given a shot. The Gomes-Lewis-Hisey-Alonso thing hasn't worked too well.

I agree it's nerves. This is his first taste of the majors.

Like I said earlier, Alonso didn't do so well last September in his callup. Alot of guys struggle due to nerves.

I have not watched his every at bat, but it seemed that every time I was listening, he made out on the first pitch. I looked it up. 36 PAs. 2 for 11 on the first pitch. 16 times it was a strike (taken or swinging). 9 times it was a ball. Over all he has 7 KO and no walks.

He has also pretty much played every day, but still, if any one gets called up and does not play every day, it is because Dusty hates rookies.

He hasn't played great but still too soon as to tell. You can't really expect a minor leaguer to come up and make all the adjustments that fast.

Sappelt will be a big time hitter.

He is all upside, he could be the answer to our lead off problem, all he needs is at bats.

I think eventually he might even be elevated to dealin status, as in

Johnny was dealin today

I was hoping he'd give them more reason to give him a chance next season. He's definitely laying an egg right now.

I still think he can flat out hit and will eventually.

I think he's our CF for the future. We need to look at trading Stubbs as hes 27 and probably has hit his plateau. What u see is what u get out of him. Sappelt has the speed to be a leadoff hitter. I would love for him to be in that spot next year. hopefully he pans out
