e.r.a. now down to 2.96.

Hmmm.

I wonder if the Reds will go after him this offseason?

The man is the very definition of a "horse." This season may be a noticeable departure from past ones, but he's both inexpensive and reliable, and we have the prospects to go after him.

.......which begs the question: Why would the Rays give him up? No matter how much the Reds value their prospects, apparently other teams don't. At least not those the Reds are willing to give up.

I expect the Rays to at least entertain trading him because it fits their normal mode of operation. Shield has been fantastic, which means his value is probably at an all time high and should be able to fetch a great haul of MLB-ready prospects. The Rays operate on a shoe-string budget and the ability to fill areas of need with good, pre-arbitration players is a key to their continued success.

If you've got the opportunity to flip Shields while his value is at an all time high, fill a couple positions of need and replace Shields in the rotation with the best SP prospect in all of baseball you've got to at least explore the possibility.
