They could also end their playoffs today. The semifinals, like tomorrow's finals, are single-game affairs.

Somehow they are going to have to pilfer (word of the week) this game today then. :)

Reds jump out quickly, scoring a run in the first. They have two runners on with just one out.
Rally fizzles as Sanchez is caught trying to steal home - 1-3-6-2.
You can expect to see just about anything in rookie ball.

Are these stout young men (I'm thinking maybe Selsky, May, Joyce, Chacin) eligible now to offer assistance to Billings' run to the playoffs?

texasdave
08-30-2011, 06:22 PM
The Minors

In the minor leagues, the rosters are managed in quite a different manner than the standard 25-man rosters in the majors. Minor league teams keep two separate lists of players. The first is the Active List which, like in the NFL, denotes which players are eligible for the current game while the second list, the Reserve List, is the entire roster of the team.

For A teams, the Active List limit is 25 players, for Short-Season A teams, 30 and for Rookie Teams, 35. All levels below AA allow clubs a Reserve Limit of 35 players. Below A-ball, only 25 players may actually get into a single game.

Billings current roster: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ros&cid=513&stn=true&sid=t513

So if the article is correct Billings can have 35 players on both the active and reserve rosters. However, only 25 of them can actually play in one game. The current Mustang's website shows they have 32 players on the active and reserve rosters. So, they can actually "pilfer" three players from the AZL Reds roster at this time. If my skills mathematic are to be trusted.

Dayton's bullpen has had a phenomenal season. Tonight, Rogers (2.71) and Hayes (1.40) gave up one hit in five innings. Wolford (1.24) has 33.3 consecutive scoreless. Howell (2.05) has been outstanding . . .

I want to revisit the Quintin Berry question. He's had an outstanding season as Carolina's leadoff guy and CF. I don't know how good his defense is, but he must have some pretty good range. He has stolen 40 bases. He's also OBPing .400.

When I asked around earlier if anybody thought he might be a prospect, the consensus was to dismiss him because of his age, which is 26, the same as Drew Stubbs (a month younger). Understandable, since he's only in AA. But look at it this way: Do you think Stubbs could have put up a .400 OBP in the Carolina League this year? Maybe he could have, but there's certainly a case for saying no.

I've never seen Berry play, so I'm not stumping to put him in the organizational top 20 or maybe even the top 40. I'm just saying that there might be reason not to dismiss him so casually.

Torreyes tried to make it a double. From the press box is was really close looking, but it did look like he was out. He shouldn't have tried to stretch it. For about a tenth of a second it seemed that the right fielder bobbled it and the relay was perfect to barely get him.... but knowing the situation, with the heart of the line up coming up in extra innings of a tie game, at home, you stay at first unless you are sure you are going to make it.

Tim Crabbe remains inconsistent, but when he's on, he's very, very good. Since July 23, his eight starts include these:

7/23: 6.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K
8/3: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
8/8: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K
8/30: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K

He's a little like Daniel Renken in that respect, but has handled Bakersfield better. He's also a year-plus older than Renken.

:beerme:

Boxberger has done a lot this year to put himself into position to be the Reds' closer in the future. Not quite sure about 2012, but shortly thereafter. Pretty glad that he will be going to Arizona to get more work and hopefully he is ready for some position in the bullpen in Cincinnati in 2012.

If I had to chose whether I wanted Cordero as closer next year for $5 million or Boxberger for the major league minimum and was not given any other choices, I would definitely pick Boxberger at this time considering the Reds' budget constraints.

:beerme:
I've been saying it ever since he was drafted. There's no doubt about it. Chapman may get a brief trial as closer until the Reds decide he's ready to be a starter, but following that, I expect it to be Boxberger for many years so long as he maintains his control.
