Your favorite Red that non-Reds-fans wouldn't much know

Another thread that indicates the season is over...anyway, the others got me to thinking, who's my favorite Red who's not a HOFer, or even a big star that other fans would know (like Eric Davis or even Votto, currently).

I have two. Favorite pitcher ever was Tom Browning. He was so damn good in the 80s. And a lefty like me. And my favorite hitter to watch when he had such a sweet swing for 2-3 years was Hal Morris. He'd be better remembered if he hadn't lost the batting title on the last day that one year (was it to Terry Pendleton?)

2000s-He is still known right now but probably in 40 years his name will be all but forgotten, Ryan Freel. He was one of the few bright shining spots during a decade of misery and his balls to the wall play is what Reds fans enjoy seeing, especially me, I'm very critical of modern day players for their lack of intensity and making the game a personal vendetta against the opposing team/players...(can you tell I'm a Cobb and Rose fan!?)

1990s-I really liked Deion Sanders-most still remember him being a Red but he'll also be forgotten one day.

1980s-Dave Collins-he had fire and intensity, and looked like the biggest dork on the field with those Harry Carey glasses that he wore!

It might be forgotten that he was a Red, but as an athlete he won't soon be forgotten, if ever. One of the most famous athletes of the recent era.

Wrong Fernandez, nux fan. You're thinking of Jared Fernandez. Osvaldo was in the rotation in I believe around 2000. He was actually from Holguin, Cuba just like Aroldis. Just a normal, run of the mill SP. Had a few good starts in one of those years, plus I was like 9 years old. Easily impressed those days lol.

I probably mentioned this before. But I have an official mlb baseball signed by Bernie Carbo when he was a Red. And it's legit. Here's why.

Went to Shea Stadium, not sure what year. Obviously early 70's when Carbo was still a Red. We had seats by the railing and the Reds were warming up taking grounders, etc., and doing some long toss. Carbo was warming up near us and a ball got away and went to the railing. He came over, picked it up, handed it to me, my Dad got out his pen, and Carbo signed it right there. I was like a 5 or 6 year old kid, but it was cool.

I still have it in a box somewhere. Probably with my huge baseball card collection I need to sell. I collected baseball cards from '74 until the mid-80's. I got to the point I'd buy the Topps sets directly. But early 70's, I bought the bubble gum and tried to collect all the cards. And I used to go to card shows and buy some older cards. I have 2 cards I cherish. A Hank Aaron from the 60's and a Sandy Koufax from the 60's. Not sure what both are worth, but I hope alot.

And most of the cards are in plastic for protection.

The Brotherhood. Bernie Carbo was drafted ahead of Johnny Bench. Amazing rookie year. Career OPS+ of 126.

Drugs ruined one more great career.


On April 1, 2010, in an interview with the Boston Globe, Carbo admitted to doing drugs during the 1975 World Series. He states, "I probably smoked two joints, drank about three or four beers, got to the ballpark, took some [amphetamines], took a pain pill, drank a cup of coffee, chewed some tobacco, had a cigarette, and got up to the plate and hit." It was not just a one-time binge, however. In the same article, Carbo states, "I played every game high. I was addicted to anything you could possibly be addicted to. I played the outfield sometimes where it looked like the stars were falling from the sky."

“I threw away my career," said Carbo. “If I knew Jesus Christ was my savior at 17, I would have been one heck of a ballplayer, a near Hall of Famer. Instead, I wanted to die." [6]

Carbo was out of baseball by age 33.
