Don't look now but both the Cards and the Giants are back from the dead.

St. Louis, you know that team that hates their manager etc, has climbed back to within 2.5 games. (Tony LaRussa any day over Dusty Baker)
San Francisco has won 8 games in a row and trails by only 3.5 games.

Roughly ten games to go. Atlanta has to be feeling the heat.

It's a shame the Queen City Boys packed it in the last two months of the season, losing to a AAA club tonight. But go on get your numbers, boys. You have earned them.

I want the Cardinals to feel the same sense of failure that the Reds feel right now.

I don't. I want them to feel even worse. My ideal scenario would play out with the Cardinals grabbing a one-game lead in the Wild Card race with two games to play. Pandemonium in the streets of St. Louis. And then having them lose the final two games, while Atlanta wins and snatches the playoff spot away. Perfect. What a crusher that would be. It would be even more perfect if Pujols took a called third strike to end the final game with the go-ahead runners on base and Carpenter got the loss. Pujols, in a steroid-induced rage, breaks his bat over his knee. Cork and a vial of HGH fly out. LaRussa comes out to argue the call, gets livid, punches an umpire and gets suspended for the entire 2012 season.
Could happen.

In this scenario, could Dusty decide he needs to retire. Also, CC Sabathia decides to opt out of his contract with the yankees, and come back to Ohio, albeit it the team in the SW corner, and sign for $400k a year?

Heck, the strong rumor is that Halladay, Lee, Sabathia, Kershaw, Shields, and others are all going to ask out of their contracts and demand a trade to the Reds or to be able to sign as a free agent with the Reds for virtually nothing in return.

Every player wants to play for the Reds. We're America's Team.

Braves lost. St. Louis came from behind to win and the Giants are leading. Redbirds now 1.5 out. If the Giants hold on they are 3.5 back.

Cardinals leading 6-2. Mets have the bases loaded in the ninth with out. Ex-Reds farmhand Justin Turner up. Two walks and an error. Full count. Ball four. 6-3. Bases loaded. Jose Reyes. Jason Motte is out after 29 pitches. Rzepcyznski in. Reyes with a bloop single. 6-4. Bases still loaded. One out. First hit of the inning was a bloop. LaRussa must be livid. Salas in to relieve Rzepcyznski. Happy days are here again. Tejada was down 0-2 in the count and fought back to run it full, before doubling. 6-6. Reyes on third, Tejada on second. Intentional walk to load them up. A lot of the big bats are out of the game for St. Louis as LaRussa went for defense.

Cards trailing 1-0 going into the 9th. They have a runner on third base with one out when David Freese strikes out. Where have I seen that before, a punch out with a runner on third and less than two outs? And then, after walking three straight to completely clog the bases and force in the tying run, Marmol uncorks a wild pitch as the Redbirds win 2-1 lead. Cubbies forever. It's like the reverse of the Mets game a couple games back. Los Bravos are losing. Cardinals creep within two. Furcal the hero by working that wild pitch.

statistical outlier

I would think with nearly 200M in payroll spent mostly on his team's hitting; a 6.50 ERA pitcher can win 50% of his games. Maybe it is an outlier; but when put in context, not much of one.

51 times BOS has scored 7 or more Runs. Roughly 30% of the games they've played.

Just a pitiful effort by Yadier Molina in the top of the 10th. And I thought he was supposed to be a pro's pro. Very high fly ball and Molina doesn't run at first and then starts jogging and staring at the ball. It bounces off the wall just short of the Crawford Boxes and away from the leftfielder. The centerfielder has to come over and run it down and Molina ends up at second instead of third. To compound things Theriot hits a comebacker to the mound and they throw Molina out at third. Ridiculous effort by Molina on that sequence of events.

Phils visit Los Bravos - Black is black. I want my ten-game lead over the Cardinals back. The Oswalt-Lowe matchup leans in Philadelphia's favor. Look for a tie heading into the final game of the season.

If there is a one-game playoff this year, St. Louis and Tampa will have home field advantage.

I originally thought the same thing, BUT then I realized that because you can't play a wildcard from your own division in the first round, the Phils will play the Cards if the Cards are the WC, but will play either the Brewers or the DB's if Atlanta gets in.

So if the Phils lay down and try to help the Braves in, then they just give the Brewers or the DB's an easier first round matchup, increasing the liklihood of a short series and an advantage for their potential NLCS foes.

Managers are stupid. That's all I can say. Why the heck would you pitch to Pence when you got Rule 5, no bat Martinez on deck?

Michael sub-Mendoza Martinez or Hunter Pence? Lemme see now.

I am learning a few things about this site. Any mention of anything relating to baseball results in an anti Baker rant. In my visit to Cincinnati this summer I did not detect this.

Do you think Baker is a better manager than Tony Larussa? And I wouldn't really describe that as a rant.

Better? No
As Good? Yes
Both have good track records and head to head they are almost even. The 2010 Reds were not as talented as the 2010 Cards and the Reds won the division. As far as who I would prefer managing the team I have been a fan of for a long time, the choice is Dusty for sure. I am biased somewhat, a family member of mine was a teammate with Dusty in the 70's.

Epic charge by the Cards. When both of us thought the season was over you always knew there was that one in a million chance. The Cards played for it and deserve it.

Go Philly!

Cards improve their team in the offseason. Cards make moves to improve at trading deadline. Brewers improve their team in the offseason. Brewers make moves to improve at trading deadline.

Reds? Crickets....

Congrats to the hardworking GM/Manager combos in MLW and STL.

Walt and Dusty, enjoy your offseason.

I just hope the Phillies give the Cardinals the same dose of medicine that they gave the Reds last season in the playoffs.

I am shocked that both the Cards and the Rays got the wild card berths. It does make me happy (see screen name if you have any questions;)) but as a baseball fan it is good to see teams head into the playoffs on an upswing. Last year the Reds kinda coasted in and went out in 3 games. The Cards did the exact same thing in 2009 so I am not picking at anyone, just stating fact. The Braves and the Red Sox would have made early, non-eventful exits had they limped into the post season with their poor September play.

The baseball that was played yesterday was really good for the sport overall and will do more to promote the sport than anything else. 4 teams tied for 2 playoff spots with 1 game to play in a 162 game season = AWESOME!
