I just looked, and Boston is 5-16 in September. Talk about tailspin. Now the final six vs. the NYY and BLT Orioles. Glad to see you can't always buy a playoff spot. Go Tampa.

But they have also had some key injuries hit them.

Tampa Bay and Boston tied in the Wild Card with two games to go.

Tuesday:
Tampa Bay hosts the Yankees. Hellickson will go for the Devil Rays. He is 6-5 at Tropicana this season with a 2.41 ERA. Colon will attempt to deal for the Yankees. He has been sputtering down the stretch as the effects of steroid usage wear off. He has given up 11 Earnies in his last 7 IP. Would New York mind it all that much if Boston missed the playoffs? Nope.
The Sawx of Beantown are visiting the Crabeaters. And the Os were terrible hosts in the first game of the three-game set. Bedard toes the rubber for Boston in what one analyst called a playoff audition. Audacious. Boston may not even make the playoffs. Baltimore is sending a rookie out to do a vet's job. Britton may be feeling some jitters.

Yep, they are due to get hot at just the right time.

If they survive the next two days I think they will win it all

There is a worse third-base coach than Berry out there. Just saw the replay of Andino's inside-the-parker and he was out by a ridiculous margin but the catcher couldn't handle an iffy relay throw.

Boston up 2-1. Tampa lead the Yanks 2-0.
Sawx jumped ahead 5-1 but the Orioles are rallying in the 4th.

Boston up 3-2 in the sixth. Lester walks the first two Baltimore hitters. Vlad comes out hacking and grounds into a 6-4-3. Wieters then walks. Jones strikes out on a full count ball at his feet. Lester throws six pitches, only one of which is in the GameDay strike zone, and strikes out Adam Jones. After three of the four hitters in front of him had drawn walks. Nice.

Rain Delay in Baltimore. Rays trail 7-0. They will need some help.

I assume they basically have to wait all night on the rain in Baltimore.

Bases loaded, nobody out for the Rays. The Yankees owe the Rays a Scott Procter appearance after serving him up for Ellsbury's game winner Sunday night.

I don't see how they can call that game. They have to play it out.

texasdave

Ruh roh. Bases loaded no outs bottom of the 8th. A walk scores a run. An HBP scores a run. Full count, everything away. And they come inside and strike out Desmond Jennings. One down. B.J. Upton sac fly. 7-3.

texasdave

Evan Longoria takes Ayala deep. 7-6. Jaso singles. Johnny Damon up. He can stick it to both of his old clubs with one swing of the bat.

4 minutes ago the Yankees had 1st and 3rd with nobody out
Boston was one strike away from winning

Now Boston blew it, the Yankees didn't score, and Longo hits a walkoff playoff clinching shot.

In my life I don't know that there's ever been a better night of baseball.

texasdave

I was pretty confident we would clinch, it was just a question of when it would happen.

Tonight was better because of what was on the line for everyone and how outrageous all of those games were (minus the Cards game).

After a long day of traveling from Cincinnati to Bristol, CT and having dinner at a Red Sox tavern, I go back to the hotel and pass out thinking MLB would have 2 one-game playoff's tomorrow. I left the TV on and woke up for some reason just in time to see Evan Longoria being interviewed and covered in champagne. My jaw dropped and I rubbed my eyes to see if I really was seeing what I was seeing! Wow, what a night. Glad I started this thread last week.

Joe Maddon is the AL Manager of the Year.

It was refreshing to see how a good manager can actually impact the results of a baseball game.

Stray
09-29-2011, 02:35 PM
Yeah with the economics in baseball it's pretty hard to fairly judge managers. If I had to pick the best my vote would be for Maddon... even before this September run I would have said that.

Ohayou
09-29-2011, 03:21 PM
Some of his whims do backfire, so it's not like he pulls magic out of his ass all the time. Sure did last night with Dan Johnson, though. No other manager would've gone with him.
