thanks for everything reds.....but i am now a Minnesota Twin!!! looking forward to a great new opportunity!!

Best of luck to him. Great guy, and was a very good insurance policy to have down in Louisville.

I think he could have a successful career as a back of the rotation starter/swing man along the lines of former Red Dustin Moseley. I hope he gets an extended shot in Minnesota.

Best of luck to the kid. Seemed like a nice guy and it was nice having him down on our AAA team for insurance. Best of luck!

I think we'll see a number of departures soon, to make room on the 40-man roster. Needed to protect some prospects.

Aww, I love Matt and am sorry to see him go. :( I wish him (and Kalee!) all the best with Minnesota and I'm sure they'll be fine. And hey, those guys come play here for Interleague next year so hopefully we get to see him again at least one time. :)

Big ballpark will hold some of those fly balls. Seems like a smart pitcher who might be able to survive as a #5. Good luck to him.

Hope the Reds got a prospect who's at least marginally interesting, but my hopes are not high.

Agreed. A number of people on the board have maintained that he could be a solid back of the rotation guy in another park, but not in GABP. This is where we find out if that is correct. Glad to see he is going to a team that permits me to root for him without conflicting emotions.

Twins Acquire Matt Maloney
By Tim Dierkes [October 31 at 1:08pm CST]

Maloney spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a 2.99 ERA, 5.6 K/9, 1.2 BB/9, and 0.9 HR/9 in 81 1/3 innings, missing much of the season with a cracked rib. Baseball America ranked him eighth among Reds prospects a few years ago, noting that his ceiling was that of a back-of-the-rotation starter.

He will be out of options this upcoming season, so it was inevitable.

Has anyone heard what the Reds are getting for Maloney? How many spots are now open on the 40 man roster?

cinreds21
10-31-2011, 02:53 PM
Should be at 39 now. Not certain though.

He stumbled badly in his recent chances. But before that, I always felt like he never really got much of a chance.

It free's up a spot for Matt Kemp. :D

It's still unclear if this was a trade or a waivers claim.

About 5-6 years ago, Maloney would've been the kind of guy you penciled in as a starter in Cincinnati before spring training even started.

The 40 man roster stands at either 35 or 36 depending on what the Reds do with CoCo.
Free agents: C Hernandez, LHP Dontrelle Willis, SS Renteria, OF Lewis
Club options: 2B Phillips, RHP Cordero

John Fay is so horrible. He said he wasn't sure if Maloney was a free agent or not. I can't stand him.

His wife Kalee said they were "traded to Minnesota," so I think that's the leader in the clubhouse.

TRANSACTIONS: The Reds have exercised the 2012 option on the contract of 2B Brandon Phillips; declined the 2012 option on the contract of RHP Francisco Cordero; outrighted to Louisville RHP Jared Burton and RHP Daryl Thompson; selected the contract of OF Denis Phipps; LHP Matt Maloney was claimed off waivers by the Twins.

The other thread says that Malony was claimed off waivers.
That's ok.
Malony really had no trade value and was no use to us (other than as an emergency starter).

Wish the guy well, but no big loss.

Isn't it possible a trade was worked out when he was claimed?

What do you think the Reds will do with the open spots?

CC Sabathia, Albert Pujols (to DH in those inter-league games and pinch hit in the others), and Jose Reyes:D

I'm thinking Votto to LF, Pujols to 3B, Fielder to 1B, Reyes at SS, CJ Wilson & Sabathia added to the rotation as free agents, Shields traded for, Heath Bell...........

Oh I forgot. Theo Epstein went to the Cubs, not the Reds.

And apparently, a payroll that blows the Yankees out of the water is going to Chicago with him. :p

Sign a few free agents and add some minor leaguers to the roster to protect in December.

Today's minor moves...

Jared Burton elected free agency, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon (on Twitter). The 30-year-old right-hander showed promise out of the 'pen in 2007-08, but has appeared in just ten MLB games since 2010. He spent time on the 60-day DL with shoulder inflammation in 2011.

8.18 e.r.a. in 11 IP. Yikes.

That's too bad. You have to think his chances are starting to run out at The Show. I always thought he had a good shot to catch on as a 4/5 type somewhere -- or at least a long reliever. You never know, but it isn't looking too good at the moment.

Every lefty eventually gets reborn as a reliever. He'll have more chances.

Buster Olney reported that Matt will undergo Tommy John Surgery on Tuesday. He was 0-4 with a 9.39 ERA for Triple-A Rochester after being outrighted to the minors.
