A decision needs to be made, or likely already has been made by the front office on wether or not we are in contention for a serious playoff run in the next 2 years. There are two very different paths a the team will follow based on that decision.

1) We are in contention for that run... trade a handful of prospects, even the cream of the crop and get 2 of Wandy/Shields/Danks/Gio Gonzalez. Spend Cordero's 10M to resign him at a discount and solidify the outfield w/ Veteran leadership like Cuddyer (about 5M each might be the going market for them in January)

2) We are not in contention... trade Votto now. Lock up some youngsters that are within the payroll and revenue projections and make the playoff run in 2014 with Alonso, Mes/Grandal, Hamilton/Conzart, Bruce, Leake/Chapman and the young arms we have and will have acquired by then.

If that decision hasn't been made there's another option

3) Watch the top player our system has produced in the last 3 decades walk for little return, while we finish at or around .500 for two more years.

So which path do you think we are on? 1, 2 or 3. Or do you have another?

The front office believes that we are on track one, we are in contention. I believe that we are as well, we're just a couple of players away from a run. Without those couple of players though (which have to be starters), we will no doubt be on track three.
Will we lose Votto to free agency? I don't think there's any question that we will, despite what Castellini thinks.
