The uniforms definitely need changing, I think they're one of the most ugly in baseball. I don't see any problem with the name but i guess if they rebranding will sell more tickets they'll chuck away the tradition.

Name change, perhaps a good idea.

The name has already changed once there based on the emerging industry of that era, with a league change it would prove to be an oppurtune moment to do it again

I suggest the older minor league name that predates the Colt 45s

New York Jets or Titans?

Padre Brown or Padre Blue?

Robins or Dodgers?

Knickerbockers or Knicks?

Lots of room for manipulation

LOL at the idea of the Astros changing their name. I think they need to give serious consideration to "Ham Fighters" ... presuming of course there are no copyright infringements with Yu Darvish's former Japanese team.

Houston Ham Fighters.

That one was a mistake IMO, Titans is just a better name for a football team, also works better with New York then Tennessee.

I would also consider a new name for the ballpark.

Minute Maid is an awful name for a ballpark IMHO.

Name changes are BAD for sports. And uniforms for that matter. So, so true. I thought the Colt .45's was clever and the Astros were a sign of the times. they had the ugliest uniforms in the 70's, but today's, if not good are at least not offensive. I thank God everyday, we are still the Reds, even though I wish we go back to the red dominated vests and red socks. The BRM uniforms were not historically correct. Look at the Cardinals and Red Sox, not to mention the Yankees (horrors) that haven't changed over how many years?

The NFL now has a Phoenix team with the moniker Cardinals and St. Louis now has the Rams. Don't get me started on the NBA changes. But let them do what they want. Millions of Astros fans will now have to live with something like the "Honey Badgers" as their team name,. God help us.

I always liked that nickname. Very fitting for a Texas team.

I always liked it, as well, but there will be the idiots that will cry foul because of the gun connotation, just like they did with the Washington Bullets. I cannot stand the politically correct crazies that waste everyone's time with their horse........

I thought of that too. It wouldn't be PC to change to the Colt 45's. I still call the Wizards, the Bullets. I will never get used to that name. It was also a marketing gimic too. They changed names and everything when they moved downtown to the Verizon Center.

I believe the Colt company had issues with the name and the change was a result of them raising a copyright suit against the team and league

It would fit with the Minute Maid theme and tie in historically with the golden age of homeruns which baseball just went through.

Ehhh, I hate to see the name change just because of the memories I have with the Astros and the players and teams that have cycled through there. Plus I hate to see the space program fade from public memory.

The obvious nicknames (Cowboys, Rangers, Texans, Mavericks, Longhorns) are already taken. In these PC days, anything to do with guns or ethnicities or gambling is verboten. Maybe they could recycle "Oilers".

They never have really settled on a uniform. Their most famous ones was the garish tequila sunrise ones which are fun to look at when you're on acid.

Like most teams, the best marketing they could do would be to win. I don't think the team name or uniforms are their problem.

01-24-2012, 08:53 AM
Well, the fact that it looks like Nasa will be either leaving or greatly diminishing in the Houston area VERY soon...migrating the name away from the space industry isn't a horrible idea. But regardless, I don't see the name change going over well here.

Uniforms though...yeah, long over due. Rainbow uni's anyone? :O)

I think that they initially had to give the team permission to use the name. I think where the problem came was that the team wasn't crazy about sharing the profits when the Colt company wanted a piece of the pie over the sale of team items featuring the Colt .45 name.

Agreed.

If Houston is going to do anything, I'd recycle the Oilers.

Of course, there are no rules that you can't take another teams identity. Ask the St Louis football Cardinals.

My close friend is a die hard Astro fan. He said he is already on the ledge with this club moving to the AL West. He said that if the name changes, he may start rooting for the Pirates.

I asked him, "what if they return to the Colt .45s?" He replied, "well then I would stick with them and put up with the DH!" Poor fellow.

HOUSTON -- The Astros recently changed owners, will switch to the American League in 2013 and could have new uniforms then as well.

One thing that won't change is the team's name.

Just unbelievable. What is wrong with people? What kind of person takes offense to a pistol on a baseball jersey that represents a part of the game's history? People like that should be shipped to an island somewhere with like-minded individuals where they could be offended by each other for eternity.

That's an awfully big gun...wow. I see your point, but to me, that's a little prominent. They are designed to kill. No other purpose. You can see how a hundreds of million dollar operation wouldn't want that to be on the uniforms of 25 guys, even for a night.

Smaller maybe, but wow....those are huge.

Think about it...

Player 1: Who we got tonight?

Player 2: "The guys we can't beat"...

It's probably worth about 4 WAR in psychology a season at least....
