Sad news. A great player and a great competitor and way too daggone young for this.

Loved that era of the Expos. Gary Carter, Steve Rogers, Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, Tim Wallach, Larry Parrish, Dick Williams manager. Lots of talent that seemed to always get edged out by the Phillies, Cardinals, etc.

Ron Darling said that Carter was the man when they played that his teammates now wish they had been. Darryl Strawberry made similar comments.
R.I.P. to a man who shouldn't have had to wait six ballots for his HOF induction and a man who reportedly was more of a Hall of Fame person than he was a HOF player.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gary Carter a few years back here in Lake City Fla when he was being inducted into the Florida Sports hall of fame.I also met Dave Johnson that day.They were in McDonalds getting lunch after a golf tourney.Gary was super nice and very talkative. RIP Gary.

I have an autographed picture of a young Gary Carter, as an Expo, with Johnny Bench.

I saw Carter play quite a bit when he was a Met. I always thought Carter was a tremendous player with great intangibles.

One of those guys who was simply a Hall of Famer, no questions asked.

Sad day to see him pass. He was a cocky and brash player who could back it up. There was always something I liked about him even though he seemed to kill the Reds. No doubt one of the best of his era.

Also a great tribute to him that he took a class in French when he was an Expo so he could comminicate well with all the Montreal fans.

NY sports radio has been abuzz with callers telling stories about what a great person Carter was off the field. Whether they met him on the street, at an event or before a ballgame, Carter always enjoyed talking to fans, signing autographs, etc.

I think Bill Lee said in his book that Carter was the only player that they moved to catcher for his health. Evidently he used to run into a lot of walls when he played outfield.

My earliest memory of Carter was being on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1980 during the playoff race. One of the giants from my teen years watching the game during the 80's. Two players who you always saw smiling back then was Gary Carter and Kirby Puckett. Now they both are on heaven's team.

He was a true leader on and off the field that any team would cherish. Those kind of skills are undervalued and hard to find. As talented as the 1986 Mets were, I don't see them winning the World Series without Carter

I was a huge Johnny Bench fan as a kid so when Bench's career started to decline Carter was the one to take over as the top NL catcher of the time. So as a young kid I wasn't to fond of Carter for replacing my hero as the standard bearer of catchers in the NL, but I later grew to really respect and admire the player that Carter was. I also really don't really judge a player how he is off the field as opposed to on the field, however from everything I have seen and heard, Gary Carter was very much a HOF person off the field.
