Glad to see this. I always felt Bruce was heavier than necessary. He looks great in these pics.

I like that in this article, Baker basically explains the concept of a pitching rotation.

The part about how if you match up a pitcher with a high ERA against pitchers with a low ERA, you will win some of the games but not most of them is genius. So Dusty has come up with a stategy of putting a starter with a low ERA (not a high one; don't get confused!) in his Opening Day/#1 spot in the rotation.

I wonder how Bronson will feel about being the example of a higher ERA veteran who if you put him in the #1 spot, you aren't going to win most of the games he starts. A manager who is good at talking to the media just might avoid using his players in a negative example like this, even if it is true.

I wonder how deeply into the season the 1 vs 1 match ups persist. It seems to me that by mid-May rotations no longer sync up.

http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2012/02/22/rotation-order-mums-the-word/

*Dusty Baker has a rotation order in mind after No. 1 starter Johnny Cueto. But he’s not telling…

“There’s no need to,” Baker said. “I’ve got it figured out. I had it figured out this winter.”

The five-man rotation has six contenders. Besides Cueto, there is Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Mike Leake, Homer Bailey and Aroldis Chapman.

.....

Early arrivals: Drew Stubbs entered the clubhouse today. Brandon Phillips tweeted that he was in Phoenix and planned to get to the complex.

“For the main part, you’ve got to go out there and do it. I talked to guys like Scott Rolen, Miguel Cairo. I talked to Miguel a lot about pinch-hitting because I wasn’t starting a lot. Miguel would say: ‘Todd, watch this guy. Watch his tendencies. Watch how many times he throws a fastball. Watch where he throws it. Understand what they’re going to throw you.

Bench once caught a Gerry Arrigo fastball bare-handed in a game, to make the point that Arrigo should stop shaking him off and start throwing the curveballs he ordered.

I think this is an old wives tale. When I was a kid, my dad told me the same story about Ernie Lombardi before anyone had ever heard of Johnny Bench.

I'm guessing that this story has been told about a lot of catchers. It may even be true about somebody, but its been going around for a long, long time.

I wonder if they are doing that to save some innings on the younsters.
I guess I can not complain about this. We need Arroyo to pitch at a league average level or we are going to have a problem, whether he is #3 or #5.

We had a thread about this five years ago. Here's one post with Linedriver recounting a conversation with Billy McCool recalling it, suggesting it may have happened in L.A. Arrigo pitched three games at Dodgers Stadium that year, so maybe I'll look for some press accounts for those games. If I had to guess, it would be the losing effort on July 7, 1968 - the other two were low scoring shutouts. If he was lacking his fastball, it was probably the losing effort.

http://www.redszone.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1441237&postcount=23

I just noted the comment about reading about it in the Sunday edition of the L.A. Times. Of the three games, the May 4th game was on a Saturday (not to mention being during the school year), so it may be that game. I'm heading down to the library this evening, maybe I'll pull up a 1968 copy of the paper to see if there's a real time report on it in the Cincy papers.

Caught this:

Ichiro drove in a run with a single, and Smoak followed with a deep drive off the glove of center fielder Daryl Jones. The play was ruled a sacrifice fly and error on Jones, with two runs scoring and Smoak winding up at second and Ichiro at third. Mike Carp and Casper Wells then followed with sacrifice flies to give Seattle a 5-0 lead.

That's 3 sacrifice flies in one inning. I wonder if that's ever happened in a regular season game? Still has to be quite a rarity if it has.

Shortstop Didi Gregorius is the guy in camp that everyone is talking about. He’s as good in the field as any Reds prospect I’ve seen since Pokey Reese. Donald Lutz and Neftali Soto have shown big-time power. Henry Rodriguez looks like a natural hitter. Soto and Rodriguez are top-shelf defenders as well. Daniel Corcino looks and throws like Johnny Cueto.

Three thoughts:

1) This sounds like a Jim Bowden quote about the Red pipeline with Jackson Melian, Ed Yarnall, Wily Mo Pena, and a whole host of might-have-beens and never-wases. Who'd that turn out?

2) Gregorius as a legitimate SS with phenomenal defensive instincts is fine. That he could go for a 700 OPS would be an added bonus. Gregorius could be a 3.5 WAR player. That's... not bad-- Starlin Castro and Jimmy Rollins live in that neighborhood.

3) According to Fay, both Soto and HRod are top-shelf defenders. Both have reputations as poor defenders that drag down their overall prospect status. Is Fay simply writing off the cuff, or has he talked to scouts who share this view? If it's the latter, woot!

I agree. It's been a relatively unheralded group, but they've performed -- in the minors and in their first big league camp. The cliche goes that it's all about opportunity. I think there's more truth to that than many think.

And the guy no one is really saying much about is Phipps. Getting it done offensively and defensively so far.

Actually, it will be quite easy. Phipps can hit .700 this spring and won't likely make the opening day roster.

His only hope would be 3 or 4 injuries.

I hope they don't. Maybe a guy lucked out and faced a bunch of guys "getting in their work" and were just out there pumping 95% fastballs the first three weeks and he was feasting on that. Spring training is a different beast than the regular season. Toss in the fast we are talking about 40 at bats.... and well, its just a bad idea for the most part.

Having been to a number of spring trainings, I understand this quite well. But these are things the people in decision making capacity should have some handle on--who was the AB against, when did it occur in spring etc. i don't expect Phipps to make the club, but I hope he continues to do enough that he's got to be taken seriously.

Sure. I read it as a stats based performance rather than what you meant. Still, I don't think Phipps is ready with the bat and nothing he is going to do in spring training is going to change that. If the Reds ever want to see him as a potential starter, he needs to be in AAA for at least 2-3 months.

I don't really see a spot for Phipps unless the team drops to 11 pitchers. Maybe if Bray or Masset start on the DL they'll do that, but I don't think so. The only other way would probably be if two of Votto, Rolen, Cairo, Bruce, Heisey, Stubbs or Ludwick go down. My guess is the 13 position guys are Heisey, Bruce, Ludwick, Stubbs, Votto, Phillips, Cozart, Rolen, Francisco, Cairo, Valdez, Hanigan and Mesoraco. I'd say Frazier is the first guy in line unless a catcher or MI go down (in which case you'd get Corky or Navarro or Janish).

I completely agree that a glove only SS on the bench is a waste as long as one is only a phone call away. The Reds, OTOH, dealt for Valdez because they seem to want one, so I think Valdez, who is out of options, makes the roster and Frazier, Janish and Phipps get optioned.

Good news on Madson, I was starting to get concerned when I haven't seen his name in a boxscore.

An overall note, it seems that I'm not the only one bored by ST this year, as RZ has been pretty dead on the baseball side. For me, ST is only about the Reds getting in shape, because there just aren't any significant roster decisions, well other than having to endure the pain of April shellings for Arroyo before he is ditched to the bullpen and Chapman is called up from Louisville.

ESPN updated their BBTN bus crud and added the Reds page today. Not much of interest to be honest, but a couple of items caught my eye.....

• Aroldis Chapman will start the season in the bullpen, giving the Reds three lefties along with Sean Marshall and Bill Bray. Chapman has a long way to go before he’s a polished pitcher -- he issued 41 walks in 50 innings last year -- but pitching coach Bryan Price said Chapman is “developing as a pitcher" this spring. He is throwing three pitches for strikes, he has a much better feel for his curveball, he has greatly improved his pickoff move and he has become a better fielder. Chapman is a contingency plan for the rotation, but only when he proves he can consistently throw more strikes. He has been better this spring.

Where did they get THIS info? They state it like a fact that he'll be in the pen. Whereas everywhere I've read, it's been the opposite. Well, this IS espn after all. :O)

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said “one way or another," the contract negotiations with second baseman Brandon Phillips are expected to be done by Opening Day. A club source said that they really want to keep Phillips, and he wants to stay. It’s not going to be an easy negotiation, but from most indications, the Reds are going to sign Phillips to a long-term deal.

The "one way or another" is a rather odd quote especially with the Hamels rumors going around.

Traded perhaps, but I can't imagine he'd pass through waivers. And I wouldn't be surprised to see them keep Harris if they waived Fransisco. Has the same (more) defensive flexibility and also bats lefty, which the Reds seem to want from that roster spot. The article said his service time was 4 years and 9 months. What's the requirement for him to get the MLB pension and other retirement goodies?

I vaguely remember the Reds doing something funky with the roster to make sure a veteran infielder(maybe Castro or Wilton Guerrero) went over the limit on service time to qualify.

Were I GM/ manager, I'd slide Arroyo into the closer's spot for the year. Both Chapman and Bailey would make the starting rotation, with Francis and Brackman as the AAA emergency starters.

I'd go with Arredondo and Marshall as set-up, LeCure, Bray, and Masset as middle relievers, and Ondrusek as the long relief. (With Fisher, Judy, and others in AAA as long relievers should Ondrusek or one of those ahead of him struggle.)

If Baker doesn't like that, he could always simply stick Arredondo in at closer (clean innings likely mean his BBs won't hurt all that much), with Masset bumped up to set-up, Ondrusek to middle relief, and either Fisher, Judy, or one of the veterans (Zevada's moustache?) as the long man.

Don't really like the idea of Arroyo as a closer. His propensity to give up the long ball would not seem to be a fit in tight ball games.

Good point.
Also, Arroyo's chief benefit is giving lots of innings.
I don't think the youngsters can absorb his workload.. why pitch Arroyo only 60-70 innings when he can give you 220 or so?

He's going to have to be effective to be a closer or it's going to be a disaster. If he's effective, he should start. If he's ineffective, he could do more damage as the closer than a BOR starter.

I know we've seen this article or a version of it before this spring, but here it is again, Heisey - despite struggles - learning to trust work he has put in at the plate:

What are the Reds going to do at 5th starter? At closer? I would joke the Reds would tell you but they'd have to kill you, except that, well, I don't think the Reds know yet. So, that's comforting...:

This highlights why I'd like to see him stay a starter for a whole year, even it means AAA. He's not a "pitcher" yet. But he's maturing. He's working on the change. He's learning that control is more important than velocity. But he's young and he needs practice. Stretching him out is the easy part. That's a physical thing that could happen over the course of a few weeks.

But if he gets put back in the pen, he won't have to learn to be a pitcher instead of a thrower. He needs the development time as a starter. Given the upside, the Reds would be crazy and short-sided not to give him every opportunity to start.

On the down side, the entire Reds bullpen has seemingly caught the anthrax, on the upside, the fill-ins have been fine so far. On the downside, its still just spring training. On the upside, this bit has run its course:

And now, queue up The Doors "This Is the End" (in your head or otherwise) and run through the end of the training camp with these stories:

Votto gets his own cereal (and $225 million dollars):

http://cincinnati.com/blogs/newintown/2012/03/30/joey-votto-gets-his-own-cereal/

(cereal)

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120402/CINCI/120402011&Ref=AR

($225 million)

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120402/COL03/304020082&Ref=AR

(Daugherty's take)

And now to the relatively non-earth shaking baseball news yesterday involving the Cincy based baseball team:

Homer to 5th spot in rotation, Chapman to pen. Here's to hoping that this is finally the year that Homer puts it all together and Chapman stays sharp in case he doesn't:

http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120402&content_id=27841542&vkey=news_cin&c_id=cin

Really, really, really good guy Paul Janish odd man out in roster scrum, but, on an up note, really, really, really, good guy Todd Frazier makes the team. Janish to provide organizational depth in AAA:

http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120402&content_id=27849802&notebook_id=27849854&vkey=notebook_cin&c_id=cin

The absolutely not-so-secret is finally confirmed by Dusty that Sean Marshall will be the closer:

http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120402&content_id=27849802&notebook_id=27849856&vkey=notebook_cin&c_id=cin

And, finally, Dusty musing that there is no time like the present to begin winning. Sounds good to me Dusty. Make it so:

http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120330&content_id=27756840&vkey=news_cin&c_id=cin

And, scene. Here's to hoping the season ends with about 95 regular season wins, and then enough beyond that to claim a World Series.
