Good read. I can't believe the copy editors didn't catch this mistake though:

"Born William Ellsworth Hoy in 1862 near Findlay, Ohio. Hoy played 14 seasons (1988-02), including five with the Reds."

Actually, there's two mistakes in there. If he played from '88-'02, that's 15 seasons, not 14.

He missed the 1900 season.

Okay, so it's only one mistake. Still, if you're used to reading John Fay's articles, that's practically immaculate.

Fay's frequency of mistakes is pretty amazing, I agree, but I will also point out that it's harder than it looks to avoid such mistakes. Blitz, for instance, might note that he meant to type 1888, not 1988.

And surely there will be a mistake in this post, as well. :)

I once had a spellcheck software that would "correct" 1899 to 1999 every single time. It was probably one of Windows' dumb ideas.
